The week started off with the weather forecast being correct for a change so with bright sunshine things looking difficult but a 2lb sea trout was landed in the Spout almost first thing. Tuesday a grilse of 3.5lb was landed in Upper Ferroch & an 8lb fish in Cottage Run. Wednesday a 4lb grilse was landed in Invercannie in almost grey dark. Thursday we had a grilse from Grey Mare & 1 from the Spout that was liced. With rain most of the day I was happy to see the river rising on Friday morning to 1ft 2ins on our gauge and there were 2 grilse landed, one from Cottage and one from Garden Run. Saturday the height was 3ins and I was surprised we blanked with a few fish being seen in Glister & Grey Mare but they didn't want to know. Flies that did the job this week were small Stoats and Posh Tosh's to 3ins Sunrays. If next weeks as good I'll be happy.

Well we got off to quite a good start on Monday morning with a 3lb Grilse being landed in Glister on a size 12 silver stoat & another lost, then a Grilse of 4lb was landed in Middle Salt Vat again on a silver stoat. Tuesday a Grilse of 5lb was landed in Grey Mare on a size 6 cascade and that was us for the week. The water temperature is cooling down a bit but we still need a flood to clean things out and get some fish in. The rain that was forecast yesterday didn't come to much but there is meant to be showers on and off for the coming week so maybe it might be enough.

After the couple of rises in water we got last week I didn't think the river would have dropped away as quickly as it did but by Monday we were down to 3ins on Cairnton gauge so it was going to be quite a hard week unless we got more water. We did get an inch or so through the week but not enough to get things going however we did manage a 3lb sea trout from Upper Ferroch on Monday. Wednesday, Keith Collin's got a lovely 4lb grilse from Invercannie (pictured below) on a tiny tube of his own tying. Thursday Michael Wright landed what turned out to be our joint largest fish of the season at 16lb from Upper Ferroch (pictured below - Michael playing the fish) on a small brown turbo disk tube. So a long with that and maybe half a dozen good offers it wasn't a bad week but we need a good few days of rain before we'll get fish in any numbers.
Cheers Brian

Well July didn't finish the way I thought it might have considering we had the first lift in water for what seemed like a very long time with Monday's height at 9ins and looking good but we blanked. Tuesday it was 11ins and again we blanked. Wednesday it was 1ft 1ins but by 11am it had risen to 2ft 4ins and was fairly dirty so that was our July pretty much done. August started off with 10ins on Cairnton gauge and running a bit peaty but I was more than happy with four being landed, all on Flamethrower type pattern's. One of 10lb from Upper Ferroch. 7lb licer from Grey Mare. 4.5lb grilse in Cottage and a 4lb grilse in Rockheads. Friday the river was 2ft 7ins and a 7lb fish was landed in Sandy Bay & another lost after 15 mins both on a Flamethrower. Saturday the height was 1ft 3ins & a 4lb grilse was landed in Invercannie on a Sunray. Today we are sitting on 8ins and still a bit peaty, so as long as we don't lose the height too much I'm sure we'll get one or two.

The lovely summer weather continues so it was going to be another hard week on Cairnton with the level going down to -5ins on our gauge on Monday and with the high water temperature's again the early morning & evening's should have been the best chance but again it was mid morning's that a couple of fish had been hooked & lost after a short time. We did get a very small lift in the water after a few heavy thundery shower's on Tuesday night but it did little to liven up anything that might have been lying about. As I'm writing this weeks report it has been fairly steady rain since early morning & the river has risen 5ins since last night so I'm quite optimistic for the coming week & July might finish ok.

Well so much for the cooler weather! Maybe by a degree or two but not enough to give us a chance of a fish through the day with daytime temperature's a cosy 25/26c and again no sign of any cloud or rain so realistically late evenings and very early mornings were the only chance which our fishing party did persevere at with light tackle and a quiet approach however only one fish was connected with the whole week on Tuesday morning in Upper Ferroch which unfortunately got round a stone and broke the leader and that was it for the week. Until the weather breaks its going to be hard work but it is interesting seeing the pools and riverbed when its as low and clear as this. Picture below of a stone in the Cottage with the date 1955 on it with a mark chiselled out slightly below it, at the moment we're about 3ins from that mark. Other picture below is looking down the Spout. Hope to have some fish to report next week

Well this past week could hardly be classed as ideal fishing condition's with the level dropping roughly an inch every second day so by Saturday it was -1 inch on Cairnton gauge, so that combined with the rising river temperature and cloudless skys the late evening's and very early morning's should have fished best. However the fish that were landed and another couple lost were mid to late morning with Upper Ferroch producing a 12lb fish on Tuesday. Wednesday a 7lb fish from Grey Mare and 5lb grilse from Invercannie. Saturday a 4lb grilse from Upper Ferroch. Flies that did the trick were Stoat Tails on 12's and 14's. The forecast for the coming week is still dry but a bit cooler so that should help a bit.
Cheers Brian
