The last full week of the season turned out to be our best with 9 salmon & 2 grilse being landed . Monday a 14lb fish from Grey Mare & an 8lb fish from Rock Heads. Tuesday an 8lb fish from the Spout, a 4lb grilse from Invercannie & a 3lb grilse from Cottage. Wednesday we blanked. Thursday Richard Harris landed our biggest of the season a 20lb cock fish from Upper Ferroch in the same spot Richard hooked our biggest last season also, it weighed 22lb. Friday we blanked but Saturday we landed a 20lb & a 14lb er in Upper Ferroch. Grey Mare accounted for a 16lb and a first ever fish of 8lb for Swiss Angler Daniel Strabinger, picture below and a 7lb fish from the Cottage. Flies that did the job were Ally Shrimp & Red Francis. Two fishing day's to go and what ever happens it has been a very hard season but it would be nice to get the 100.

    Cheers Brian

The week started off with the height on Cairnton gauge at -3ins so it was going to be hard going but on Monday, a member of the Mattius Helde party from Sweden had four good offer's in Garden Run only for them to be short lived and another member of the same party to hook fish in Upper Ferroch and Grey Mare only for them to drop off after a short time so very unlucky not to land something and that was it until Thursday when a sea trout was landed in Invercannie in heavy rain which did bring a rise of just over a foot on Friday when another sea trout was landed in Grey Mare but the river didn't rise enough for it to make enough of a difference but the forecast is for some heavy rain this coming Wednesday so we might get a good couple of days yet

After another slight rise last Sunday I thought Monday would have been better but we only managed a 4lb Grlise from Upper Salt Vat and that's all that we landed for the week and a few more were lost but nothing that was fresh. Again as I've mentioned in previous weeks that if we don't get the water we'll only pick up one or two old fish but maybe more if we get some frosts. The weather this last week has been exceptional and going into October it looks to be much of the same.

The past week started off with the height at minus 1 on Cairnton gauge so the weather warnings for rain and gales last Sunday didn't materialise but we are getting used to the prolonged low water now. Monday we got off to quite a good start with a 3.5lb grilse from the Spout on a small Red Francis and a 2lb sea trout from Upper Ferroch on the same pattern, then it was quiet for the rest of the week until Saturday when a good fish was lost in Potters but it was encouraging to get a 4inch rise on Thursday and it seemed to waken things up elsewhere but unfortunately not for us but the height at the moment on Cairnton gauge is 6ins so maybe tomorrow.

Another difficult week with the river dropping back to 0ins on Cairnton gauge on Monday after the slight rise last Sunday and I thought it might have wakened up the odd resident that's lying about but again the good weather continues and that's what is against us but Sam Langhead did manage to land a 9lb fish in Upper Ferroch on Tuesday on a small Red Francis and another four lost, that was it for the week. We have weather warnings for most of the country today but at the moment its lovely so maybe it'll come in later.

A very quiet week on Cairnton with the water height sitting at roughly -4ins every day and bright sunshine it felt like July again but the difference was a cooler water temperature which I thought might have livened things up but we had to settle for one fish for the week, a 12 lb slightly coloured fish from Upper Ferroch on a size 12 Silver Stoat. Another couple were lost through the week but that was our lot but things could be looking up as the height on Cairnton gauge this morning was 3ins but until we get a proper rise its going to be a quiet Autumn.

This week we had a very good party of Danish anglers who have fished Cairnton a long number of years and are very keen on traditional salmon patterns or I should say one pattern the Blue Charm which they all fish on various sizes and very lightly dressed. In previous years they have done this with great success but this year it was going to be a lot more testing with the low water but they seemed to have the measure of things and I think they did very well to land 5 grilse and connect with one or two more over the week considering the conditions. The water height on Monday was at 1ins but a 5lb grilse was landed in Cottage Run on a size 12 Blue Charm. Tuesday a 5lb grilse from Upper Ferroch, a 4.5lb grilse from the Spout & a 5lb grilse from Middle Salt Vat. Thursday a 5.5lb grilse from Upper Ferroch all on Blue Charms. Considering the bright sunshine every day & by Saturday the height -3ins I'd say a pretty good week.

    Cheers Brian
