Fishing conditions over this past week have been the best we have had so far this season with a dropping river, apart from Friday when it rose slightly but still remained crystal clear, however the party that we had fishing had to settle for a couple of half hearted offers for the week. The river has risen again today to 4ft 10ins but the forecast is for high pressure this week so I would hope for a dropping river and a reasonable chance of a fish or two.

A very different February compared to the previous two seasons with high levels and warmer water temperatures this year however we did manage to land 5 for the month, slightly down on the 5yr average but it's early days. The first half of last week was pretty much a wash out for us but we did manage a fish of 8lb from the Malt Steep on Friday and with the height at 2ft 6ins today its looking better for the coming week. The forecast is for a bit colder and drier which should keep the river dropping and give us a better chance.

Another week of reasonable fishing conditions but only one being landed for the week from the Malt Steep at 7lb on an Ice Maiden Snaelda. Maybe this coming week might turn out better after the river falls away after the big rise today. 9ft on Cairnton gauge.

Every day this week we had pretty good conditions for a fish or two but we had to settle for two kelts and a baggot which was strange considering what's being caught upstream. Some harder weather would help to slow a few up but this weeks going to be mild according to the forecast. Fishing is a funny game especially in the spring so we will just have to be patient.

The first full week started off on a positive note for us with a fish of 7lb being landed by Derek Harris in the Colonel on Monday. Dave Cowie landed a cracker of 8lb in Lower Ferroch on Thursday and I was lucky enough to get one of 9lb in Grey Mare on Friday so quite a good start for Cairnton considering weather and water conditions. All fish were landed on floating lines with heavy sink tips and Cascade tubes.

Another Opening Day but unlike the last two years we blanked but it was good to get started again and hopefully the season's better than last. Those that have been to Cairnton before will see a change in the landscape down at the bottom hut. This was caused by the gales in early December. (picture below)

The last Monday of the season started off with fairly steady rain and that continued the whole day, the height was at 4ins so it was looking quite good but it was a slow start, however it was down to local tackle dealer David Craik to get us going with an 8lb fish from Glisters on a large Red Francis. Invercannie produced an 8lb fish again on a Francis variant and the Cottage produced a 12lb fish on an Ally's Shrimp. Today, the last day, also was looking good but the river had risen through the night with all of yesterday's rain and although we fished it hard we hardly saw a thing but it was a lovely day to end the season.
Let's hope next season is a little kinder to all our Cairnton rods. I wish you a good winter and look forward to seeing you again next year.
Cheers Brian.
