Well last weeks report of rain falling and forecast to keep things topped up it certainly did that as of Monday morning we were sitting at 9ft and rising to 13ft on Cairnton gauge which will be the highest the river has been for some time and gave it a good clean out. It paid off sooner than I was thinking with a sea trout being landed on Tuesday in Grey Mare. Wednesday was our best day of the season with six fish and two sea trout and a few lost, all fairly spread through out the beat. Thursday two were landed with Ron Stewart from Dunkeld landing our largest of the week at 14lb in Sandy Bay on a size 8 Cascade. Friday surprisingly we blanked but Saturday we landed two fresh Grilse, one in Sandy Bay and one in the Malt Steep, favourite flies were Cascades and Park Shrimps, size 8s and 10s and on tubes. This coming week should be good with the river sitting at 1ft 11ins this morning.

This past week started off looking quite promising with the height at 2ft 6ins on Monday morning but the river began rising again so that did slow up our chances a bit, but a 2lb sea trout was landed later that evening. Tuesday a 4.5lb grilse was landed in Cottage with the height at 1ft 6ins. Wednesday a 5lb grilse was landed in Grey Mare with the height at 1ft 1in. Thursday the height was 1ft 2ins and rising which did'nt help but a fresh 15lb fish was landed in Cottage late evening. Friday the height was 1ft 2ins and there seemed to be one or two more about but surprisingly only a 4lb grilse being landed from the Grey Mare. Saturday the height was 2ft 6ins and rising after some very heavy over night rain and not looking great but Olga Wright who is a very competent fisher lady hooked and landed her first of the week on Saturday afternoon in the Grey Mare on a Junction Shrimp tube, it weighed 12lb and was still carrying a few lice ( pic below ). Other successful flies were Ally's shrimp and Cascades. With heavy rain falling and forecast it should keep us topped up this week.

A good finish to a very hard week with Rob Walton landing a fresh 5lb grilse in Glister on a size 13 Cascade. His father Howard Walton landed a nice fresh grilse of about 4.5lb in Cottage on a similar pattern and Mike Richardson landed a fresh grilse in Cottage Run. This coming week looks quite promising with the river running fairly big after some much needed heavy rain.

A  fantastic week if you were a tourist with the air temperatures reaching a cosy 29C on Thursday but it did not make good fishing conditions. Last week started quite promising with the river up at 2ft 1in and I thought it would have pulled one or two fish in but the river dropped away and the water temperature jumped up to to 68f on Friday which made fishing pretty hard. Early mornings were the best chance of a fish as evening water temperatures were at there highest because of the heat of the day and although we tried everything, stripping sunrays and down to size 20's we were blank for the week but with next weeks forecast is slightly cooler so we should have a better chance of a fish.

A slightly better week with three grilse being landed and two sea trout. Monday a fresh grilse of about 5lb was landed in Upper Salt Vats on a size 13 Park Shrimp and Wednesday a 3lb sea trout was landed in the same pool as Monday's grilse on a size 11 Junction Gunn. Thursday a sea trout was landed in Potters then Saturday two grilse were landed, one of 5lb in Upper Ferroch on a Sunray and the second of similar size in the Cottage Run on a size 8 Cascade as the light was going late on ( pic below) . The river is up an inch on yesterday, probably due to the localised thunder storms that were kicking about on Saturday. We still need some serious rain but with the clean grilse caught on Saturday its looking more encouraging for the start of this week.

Another difficult week with bright sunshine. It was going to be early mornings and evenings that should have produced and although evenings were more popular with a fish or two being seen nothing was landed until Saturday when Ross Macdonald landed a sea liced fish of 6/7lb in the Cottage run on a small Yellow Stoat Tube. Another sea liced 9lb fish was landed in Potters on a size 13 Park Shrimp and the same fly accounted for another 9lb fish from Upper Salt Vats, although very fresh no lice (pic below). There is rain forecast for tomorrow and Wednesday which should help if its enough.

This past week was going to be slightly more difficult with the river dropping away but not impossible. We fished all the pools with lightly dressed flies and full floaters with the odd Sunray pulled through but not a thing. We did see the odd fish or two mainly in Upper Ferroch and that was where Lee Craig landed our only fish of the week on Friday evening, a clean grilse of about 3.5lb on a small Willie Gunn variant and that was it for the week. At the moment there are some very heavy showers floating about so we might just get some fresh water for tomorrow.

    Cheers Brian
