What a really good week for us with 6 fish landed and all safely returned. First off the mark was regular rod Andy Ashcroft getting his season off to a start on Monday landing a lovely fresh fish in Kelpie on a gold boddied Willie Gunn. On Tuesday new visitors to Cairnton were Jenny and Steve Wellard and between them managed to land 5 lovely liced fish. 3 from the Upper Ferrochs and 2 from the Middle Ferrochs. 4 were on a Kinemorny Killer and 1 on a Sunray with Steve landing 4 and Jenny landing 1 which I'm told is very unusual as Jenny normally lands more but that's the fishing.

Next week looks pretty good too with the height at 1ft 9ins today and with some snow melt should keep us going at a good fishing height this week.

A pretty quiet week for us at Cairnton and Middle Blackhall. Albeit we had not a bad water height most days and all the bits were covered, not much was seen but hopefully with the rise in water today we should get one or two coming through this coming week.

This past week started off with the height at 1ft 1ins and we were still needing a change in conditions for things to improve and we got it on Tuesday night. By Wednesday morning the river had risen to 3ft on Cairnton Gauge and it paid off with a fish of roughly 14lb from the Middle Salt Vats and a liced 7lb er from the Old Garden, both fish were on an Ice Maiden variant on a full floater with a fast polytip. It was also good to get a look at the pools with the height being the lowest and the clarity being the best since the flood a month ago and I have to say that apart from some bank erosion our pools look pretty good, some have been scoured out and others have filled in slightly but nothing that will stop fish lying in them. The height this evening was 1ft 2ins so another lift would not go a miss to keep one or two trickling in.

We have rods available over the next few weeks on both Middle Blackhall and Cairnton so please contact Sarah to enquire or book. sarah@cairntonestate.co.uk

This past week was very quiet on the catches front and very little interest other than from the odd Kelt that was still lying about, mainly down at the Malt Steep area, and I hate to say it but a lift in water would probably help our cause as a change in conditions should get a few fish on the move whether it be fresh fish or fish that are lying about.

    Cheers Brian.

The third week of the season saw us having pretty good condition's on Cairnton and Middle Blackhall with the height between 1ft 5ins to 3ft 2ins and the water temperature from 31f to 35f, so it should have been enough to slow any fish up for a while but we had to be content with a few kelts for the first three days of the week however on Thursday Ghillies, Cohn O'Dea and Callum King, had a change of scenery from the Tay and paid Cairnton a visit which saw Cohn land a lovely 8lb fish in the Old Garden on a Monkey. Condition's for the coming week look pretty good weather wise so hopefully we can add a fish or two to that.

The second week of the season started off looking really good with the river at a nice height but we were still looking for our first fish of the season. However it took until Saturday with the river sitting around 1ft 11ins on our gauge when Sean Rennie landed his first Springer at 6lb from the Upper Ferroch on Cairnton bank on a Dee Sheep. The fish was very fresh with lice marks and hopefully marks the start of a good season for Sean.

Next on the scoresheet was well known angler Graham Reid with a lovely 10lb er on a Willie Gunn tube from Kelpie on the Middle Blackhall bank. Both Fish were quickly photographed and safely returned.

Regular Cairnton & Middle Blackhall angler Allan Gowers sent me some lovely flies of his own tying this week and I look forward to using them in the coming weeks.

Condition's for the coming week look promising so hopefully I will be reporting a fish or two next Sunday.

    Cheers Brian
