This past week saw us having a pretty good water height each day but things were fairly hard going with gale force winds the first three days, then things settled a bit on Thursday and Friday. Jenny Wellard saved our week with a sea liced 6lb er from the tail of Glisters on a Park Shrimp. Saturday saw the river rising fairly quick all day and saw our chances diminishing but still an encouraging start to the spring on the river. Next weeks weather looks slightly more settled so should be a wee bit better.

This past week saw us fishing in almost late April weather with warm days which gave us a small rise in water each day due to the snow that is left on the tops getting a shift. Although the fishing was a bit harder we managed to land two fresh fish with Tony Black from Murthly on the Tay landing his first Cairnton fish in the Old Garden on Tuesday. Then regular visitor Charles Stuyck landed a cracker on Friday in Sandy Bay.

This coming week looks fairly settled weather wise and with a few being caught below us at the end of last week things are looking fairly promising for the next few days.

    Cheers Brian

A really good week for us with fish landed each day split between both banks and we also had a few lost. Top rods were Andy Ashcroft landing 3, all were on an Alistair tube and the biggest was 15lb. Allan Gowers on his first visit back this season landed two, one from the Grey Mare on Monday and another on Tuesday. Another returnee was Iain Wilson from Borders Gun Room who didn't disappoint with a cracker from the Long Jetty where he has had success previously. On Saturday John Grieve landed a good fish in the Malt Steep on the Middle Blackhall side.  I really do hope these catches continue.

2017 got off to a good start with two fish being landed on opening day for Ian Clark in the Middle Ferroch of about 8lb and Alec Lyle landing a nice fish in Sandy Bay of about 7 1/2lb along with a fair few kelts aswell. Thursday plenty of kelts were landed from both banks and all well mended. Then on Friday Ian Clark did it again landing a lovely fish of 9lb in the Grey Mare before the river started rising late in the morning. Saturday was looking pretty promising in the morning but unfortunately the river started rising again and colouring up which slowed our chances. Next week looks fairly good if condition's behave.

    Cheers Brian

The last week of the season saw us landing 3 salmon and 5 grilse with a few more lost here and there but I was very happy with the season. We did have a slow start but things really picked up in June with 41 being landed to 19lb and a really good stamp of fish. July wasn't too bad either with 32 fish caught up to 20lb but the good weather and low water decided to appear at the end of July and continued into August/September which did not help us at all. However we had a good October with 20 fish landed, so all in all a pretty good season.

Hopefully we don't have any big spates between now and the start of 2017 as the repaired banks from the floods of Storm Frank will still need time to settle in.

I am looking forward to next season already and have expectations of a better grilse run after seeing a very good run of smolts this year.

Bookings for 2017 are being taken for full fishing parties as well as single rods and with the reduction in prices for 2017 we have seen an increase of interest so please make sure you contact Sarah sooner rather than later to get the dates in the diary you require. email sarah@cairntonestate.co.uk.

We will keep you up to date with any news during the off season but in the meantime thank you to everyone who supported the River Dee in 2016 and most importantly to all of our clients who returned to us this year as well as the new clients that we hope to see again next season.

    Cheers Brian

This past week saw the arrival of a Swedish ladies fishing party to the Dee. They enjoyed a day at Cairnton on Monday and although there were plenty of fish about it was down to Maria Alander to save the day with a 10lb cock fish from the Grey Mare assisted by Ross McDonald. Tuesday picked up a bit with 3 fish being landed for John McCallum with a 10lb er from Potters, a 10lb er from the Cottage and a 7lb er from the Upper Ferroch all on a very lightly dressed Munro. Wednesday saw a 5lb Grilse from Grey Mare on a Red Francis. On Thursday Andy Ashcroft landed a 9lb er in Glisters on a Francis. Friday was fairly quiet but on Saturday our Middle Blackhall side finished pretty well with Alex Subbotin landing 3 fish to 15lb, one from Floating Bank and the other two from Canary.

As we come down to the last week of the season the forecast looks fairly settled apart from some rain later in the week but I would prefer it stays fishable for the last few days.

We have 2 rods available on Cairnton for tomorrow (10th Oct) and 1 rod for Cairnton on Wednesday (12th Oct) as well 1 rod on Middle Blackhall for tomorrow (10th), 2 on Middle Blackhall for Tuesday (11th) and 2 Middle Blackhall on Wednesday (12th).

Please email Sarah to book these last few days now. sarah@cairntonestate.co.uk

Also please contact Sarah to get your dates in for 2017. We have good availability for February and March, July and August and with the reduction in prices it certainly does make it an exciting opportunity to have a few more days fishing.

    Cheers Brian

This past week was looking the best of the back end of the season with a good rise last Saturday night and into Sunday but just as the last few weeks have seen us struggling with catches this one started very similarly with the odd fish showing here and there but it was Tuesday before we were on the scoresheet with a 12lb er from Invercannie for Chris Inglesfield. Then on Thursday John McCallum landed a nice 12lb er in the Grey Mare. Friday was fairly quiet after a slight rise on Thursday but Saturday was pretty good with 3 fish caught. Craig McDonald, the Ghillie from Glentanner landing a 14lb er in the Upper Ferroch on a Francis Tube. The other 2 were landed on our Blackhall side with Frank Kennedy landing a fish of about 7lb in Canary and his fishing pal Colin Apperley landing a fish of a similar size on a Hitched fly at dusk in the Kelpie pool which takes us past our 2015 total and with a couple of weeks left to the season we should add a couple more to that.

We do have a few rods available on both banks over the last 2 weeks of the season so please do contact Sarah to get your last cast before the end of the 2016 season.

We are also taking bookings for 2017 so please contact Sarah now to secure the dates you require.
