On Monday the river was at 3 inches on the Cairnton gauge. On Tuesday we got the water we were needing badly with overnight terrential rain. The river was 6 inches and rising quickly and by 5pm it was sitting at 7ft. By Wednesday it had dropped down to 4ft and was still carrying a little peat stain but not impossible. Fish were showing but we couldn't connect. Thursday conditions were near perfect with the river sitting at 2ft 4 inches but again we could not connect. Friday we managed to get one from the Grey Mare, a 12lb coloured cock fish. On Saturday we got a beautiful sea liced 12lber from the Cottage caught by Trevor Telling (pictured below).

This week on Cairnton was quite hard going again. We have not had any significant rain for sometime now although we had a slight rise mid week of a few inches. We have also had a few hard frosts which would normally get a few of the old cock fish on the take at this time of year. However we did manage to land 2 salmon, 4 grilse and 1 sea trout this week which brought the total amount of fish caught this season so far to 201 salmon and grilse. John Marshall started the weeks catch off with a 16lber from the Grey Mare, quickly followed by David Cowie, who was a guest of John Marshall, with a 6lb autumn cock fish from the Grey Mare (pictured below). Hopefully the weather forecast is correct this week with the promise of midweek rain, which we need very badly.

With very bright sunshine most of the week, a strong westerly wind and the river sitting at 6 inches every day it didn’t give us the best chances but we did manage to get one on Thursday morning from the Rock Heads, Alex Mason caught a fresh 6lb grilse (pictured below) which was safely returned. We need rain to stir things up. Hopefully it will come soon.

The week started off really well with the water sitting at 1ft 4in. We landed 2 on Monday from the Grey Mare. It was Wednesday before we caught another from Garden Run. Fishing conditions were extremely hard with bright sunshine every day and surprisingly early morning and evenings did not produce the goods. Hope we get rain soon.

The Cairnton gauge this morning at 7 inches and looking downstream from Glisters.

A regular party of scandinavian anglers arrived to what turned out to be the second best week of the year to date. At the start of the week they were catching fish on Blue Charms but by the end of the week with the river rising they had to adapt to bigger flies and it paid off with them landing 16 for the week, the biggest being 17lb from Middle Ferrochs. The forecast for the coming week is dry with high pressure dominating which may not bode well for us.

Another good week with fish being landed every day on a variety of flies, these included Cascade, Monkey, Ally Shrimp, Sun Ray Shadows doing the business. The best fish of the week was caught by Keith Collins, a 16lb from Upper Ferrochs on a Sun Ray (pictured below). Fish were about in every pool but were very dour but with the forecast for rain next week it should waken them up.

Rain arrived on Sunday and we got a small lift of a few inches on Monday which produced 5 all from the Cottage and all to an Executioner, size 12. The river rose all day on Tuesday and we were lucky to get 1 as the water was getting dirty. By Wednesday it started to drop again and we landed 6, all on Cascades throughout the beat. Thursday the river was 3ft and rising and dirty. Friday and Saturday we managed a fish each day. All in all a good week.

    Cheers Brian
