March got off to a good start on Middle Blackhall with two very fresh fish being landed by Dee regular Andy Ashcroft. On Tuesday Andy landed a 9lb fish in the Malt Steep and on Saturday he also landed an 8lb fish in Canary, both fish were on a Gold bodied Willie Gunn Tube. It was a good fishing height for both banks but favouring Middle Blackhall bank later in the week as the water rose. Although the odd fish was seen they were not hanging about. It's a fairly big water today and hopefully it's brought a few fish in.

Well that's the first month of the season over and it wasn't too bad for us with 7 fish being landed. 6 from Cairnton and 1 from Middle Blackhall which has been a learning process for myself and the rods but made a bit easier crossing over by boat rather than the 25min drive round. It's been really good to fish pools from either bank depending on water height and wind which the rods have been happy to try. Anyway back to last week which was surprisingly quiet considering the good water height but Lee Craig from Carham on the Tweed landed a lovely wee fish of 6lb in Sandy Bay on Friday and that was it for February. March would normally see things improve so hopefully with the rise today it shall get off to a good start.

The change in conditions I was hoping for did arrive on Monday with the river rising most of the day and the water temperature rose 4f and it payed off for Mike Clark who landed a 12lb fish in Lower Ferroch on a Black and Yellow tube. Our Middle Blackhall rods also had a quite a few kelts plus two fish being lost, one in Kelpie and the other in Floating Bank. Tuesday and Wednesday looked really good for both banks but surprisingly only a couple of kelts landed. Thursday the river rose to 7ft on Cairnton gauge and although we fished both sides, things were against us. Friday and Saturday looked good for a fish from either side but only a couple of light offers which were more likely kelts. As I said in last weeks report its early days.

The second week of the season was more like late spring than early February with some lovely warm days which gave us a slight rise in water height on Monday and Tuesday with the addition of snow melt but the frosts at night seemed to check this and by Wednesday the river was dropping away again but still looking good. Thursday the grue slowed things up for a few hours but apart from that it was a good fishing week with Phillip Wood landing a 12lb fish on Tuesday in the Garden Run on a large single Thunder and Lightning and Graeme Reid landing a very fresh fish of 9lb on Saturday in Lower Ferroch on a size 7 Cascade. It's early days but we could do with a lift in water or water temperature to ginger things up.

A good start to the 2015 season with Graeme Caton and his party fishing Cairnton and Middle Blackhall for the first three days. Monday Ian Clark landed our first fish of the season, a nice 9lb fish from Cairnton pool on Middle Blackhall side on a size 8 Cascade. Ian's first Dee fish and opening day fish. The party also landed a few kelts pretty much spread through the Beat. Tuesday was very quiet for us with the grue coming down. Wednesday morning was quiet because of Grue but it cleared about lunchtime and Graeme Caton landed a nice 7lb fish in Invercannie on a Willie Gunn tube. Thursday and Friday a few kelts were landed. Saturday Clive Williamson landed a nice 8lb fish in Upper Ferroch on a very simple Black and Yellow tube plus a few kelts being landed. The coming week looks fairly settled weather wise and as long as the height doesn't drop away to much we should pick something up.

A good final three days of the 2014 season at Cairnton with a 10lb fish landed in Garden Run and a 10lb fish landed in Grey Mare for Andy Coull. Tuesday a coloured Grilse of 5lb was landed in Middle Ferroch. Today a 5lb Grilse was landed in Glister for Bryan McIntosh and Dave Taylor had an 11lb fish from the Grey Mare. Bob Minto also landed a 5lb Grilse in Middle Ferroch and that was it for the 2014 season, a season that will be remembered for all the wrong reason's but at least we finished on a good note.
During the 2014 season it was good to see a lot of Cairnton regulars and new visitors fishing with us and we look forward to seeing everyone back for 2015 and hope it is a bit more productive.

The last full week of the season was quite a trying one weather wise, with lashing rain and gales blowing, to high rising water and bright sunshine, however we did manage some success and after losing a couple on Monday, Richard Harris landed an 8lb fish in the Grey Mare on a Pot Bellied Pig Flamethrower and had several offers before the river started rising on Tuesday. Wednesday was a lovely sunny day but a bit of a wash out for us with the river rising all day. Thursday was looking good for a fish or two but we only managed an old cock sea trout of 3lb. Friday was quiet considering the good conditions but Richard Harris landed a 10lb fish in Middle Ferroch on the same Flamethrower as earlier and a 4lb Grilse was landed by Jeff Milligan in Grey Mare on a Cascade tube. Saturday was looking pretty good aswell but an offer and a fish on for a short time in the Malt Steep was it for the week. The river is looking good today with the height at 2ft 2ins and high pressure dominating so I would like to think we'll get a fish or two in the last three days.
