Last week got off to a really good start with regular Cairnton rod, Colin Tait, landing a 9lb fresh fish in the Rock Heads and a 7lb sea liced fish in the Cottage. Both were on a size 12 Editor. Tuesday was a bit of a red letter day on the Sea Trout front with 6 being landed upto 3lbs. All were fresh and some sea liced and all caught on a variety of flies between 4 inched Sun Ray Shadows down to size 14 Stoat Tails. A few more were also lost. Wednesday seemed to be another day for the Seat Trout with 4 being landed to 3lbs, again on similar flies to the previous day. The latter half of the week seemed to be a bit quieter with just one Sea Trout being landed on Thursday and a couple of Seat Trout and Salmon being lost. So all in all not a bad week with 2 Salmon and 11 Sea Trout being landed.

Prospects for the coming week look not bad with the river sitting at 10 inches today with high pressure dominating the coming week so the early mornings and evenings will more than likely give the best chance.

Last week saw the return of the Festing family and friends back to Cairnton and Middle Blackhall for their annual fishing trip which will probably amount to 30+ years fishing at Cairnton with some good years and some lean. This year happened to be a quiet one on the Salmon front with a Grilse of about 3.5lb landed in Invercannie on a size 12 Arndilly for Tim Buxton. Most of the weeks sport was with the very good class of Sea trout which are around at the moment with six being landed and a similar amount lost, all between 2.5lb and 4lb and pretty much spread through out the beat. So the party left this morning very happy and looking forward to coming back next year.

The coming week is looking quite promising with some rain forecast here and there, so hopefully we get a freshen up for our returning party headed up by Lee Craig, Head Ghille from Carham on the Tweed.

Considering last weeks drought of fish, this week got off to a great start with Callum King, under Ghillie to Bobby White at Stanley on the Tay, landing his first Dee fish on his very first visit to Deeside. The salmon weighed 7lbs and was caught in Upper Ferroch on a size 10 Cascade. Tuesday was another good day with a fish of 12lb landed in the Grey Mare and a fresh fish of 8lb landed in the Cottage as well as a 2lb seat trout which was landed in Invercannie, all of which were caught on a size 10 Executioner. Wednesday continued to be fruitful with a 7lb fish caught in the Cottage for Phillip Wood on a size 12 Executioner. We also had our first Grilse of the season, a touch over 3lb which was sea liced and caught on a size 12 Executioner also. A 2lb sea trout was also landed by John Webb on a small Executioner. The mini heat wave continued later in the week and although we were fishing late into the evenings we only managed to connect with a sea trout on Friday night which dropped off but I was more than happy with the first three days of the week.

This coming week looks to be a little cooler with the chance of the odd rain shower, so hopefully that should prove positive for our returning fishing party to Cairnton & Middle Blackhall.

With a very experienced party of anglers on both banks for the full week and with a good rise on Tuesday to 4ft 6in I was hoping for good sport from Wednesday onwards. By Wednesday morning the river dropped back to 2ft 4in and the odd fish and sea trout were being seen but we had to settle for a 3lb sea trout in the Lower Ferrochs. Then late on Saturday we got a small fish of 7lb and a 2lb sea trout.

The start of last week was looking very promising with the river sitting at 1ft 5in. The party of 3 we had fishing for the week know Cairnton quite well and I was surprised it was Wednesday before anything was landed which was a 3lb Sea Trout in the Grey Mare on a Stout Tail size 10. On Thursday we had a new rod arrive at Cairnton, Nick Warren, for 3 days of fishing and on his first visit Nick managed to catch a 2 1/2lb Seat Trout in the Salt Vats on a size 8 Executioner. Nick saved the week on the Salmon front as on Saturday he landed a lovely sea liced 8lber in Invercannie on a size 8 Ghillie. Other than that there was the odd fish seen here and there but they seemed to be just pushing through.

Prospects for the coming week with the rain falling at the moment and more forecast for tomorrow evening will hopefully give us the lift of water we are badly needing now.

Last week we had the return of Mats Bergman and party from Sweden on the Cairnton bank. Mats and his friends are very hard fishers and would normally account for 6 or 7 fish for the week and a few Sea Trout but this year although a little quieter they were very happy to land 1 Salmon and 3 Sea Trout. Jan Oholm landed a lovely 9lb licer from the Grey Mare on a size 9 Cascade. Jan kept up his 100% record at Cairnton and not blanking. Mats himself accounted for 3 lovely Sea Trout all in the 3lb bracket. These were all caught on a size 12 Hairy Mary.

Over on Middle Blackhall, Philip Wood landed a 7lber from Invercannie on a size 8 single Thunder & Lightning. Philip also landed a Sea Trout on the same fly.

For next week we could do with some rain to give us a lift and to freshen things up but with another group of experienced anglers arriving for the week we should manage to pick up one or two.

On Monday the river height started off at a promising 2ft on the Cairnton gauge and we saw a few fish but unfortunately the river started to rise quickly and ended up over 4ft by the end of the day which was not good for fishing. On Tuesday the river was sitting at 4ft 3in and although we saw a couple nothing materialised. On Wednesday the river was at the better height of 2ft 11in and Ian Mackinson managed to land his first ever salmon after 3 years of trying which was landed in Middle Ferroch's on a size 8 Cascade. On Wednesday evening Sven Axelsson from Sweden caught a fresh 7lb fish from Middle Ferroch on a fly of his own tying helped by his friend Philip Glendinning. Thursday was probably our quietest day of seeing fish but regular Middle Blackhall Rod Giles Field managed to land a lovely 7lber in the Floating Bank on a size 8 Cascade. Friday we caught 2 licers from the Grey Mare, 1 for Richard Milne on a size 8 Cascade of 7lb and a 6lber for regular Cairnton Rod John Forbes on a size 6 Crathie.

Prospects for the coming week continue to look pretty good and with a very experienced party from Scandinavia staying with us all week I would expect one or 2 fish.
