This has been a very wet week. With the river reaching 7ft & very dirty towards the middle of the week.

But we still managed two salmon & three grilse.

On Monday morning I met Mr M Price at the hut, along with his friend and family.

Martin introduced me to James and Liz Eyre-Walker. Who were going to Share a rod for the week. James was a complete beginner, Liz had some experience on trout fishing.  I suggested we use a floating line and intermediate tip on specific pools. James and liz started in Grey mare with a floating line & black and yellow shrimp Size 10. About 20 minutes into the tuition I suggested we move down the pool where the taking spot is. I pointed at the rock and asked James too cast out and to do a fast retrieve.  Halfway through the swing the line tightened,  after a tug of war I slipped the net under a 4lb Grilse. After a few pictures of his very 1st fish,  It was released to continue its journey.

On Wednesday the river was rising & was carrying a lot of colour. On the beats gauge it was sitting at 7”. It was un fishable.

Thursday morning  the river started to drop back so we changed tactics. I started them off with a 10ft fast sink tip and bigger colourful flys and i set of strimming.

Late afternoon I made my way up to lock the hut but as I was driving up river I could see Liz who looked very distressed,  waving her arm around looking for help in the distance. On arrival I could see James struggling with a very angry fish. After a few minutes I netted a very coloured cock fish.  I must say it was very lucky as the hook come free in the net.  The fish tipped the weight net on 18lb. After a few pictures the fish was on his way!

On Friday the river was looking fishy so I decided that I would ghillie as the end of the season is not that far away,  I’m behind on where I would like to be on fish numbers for this time of year.

I met up with Martin at the hut and I suggested that we put on a 10ft fast sink tip.  After scratching around in his bag Martin could only find a 5 ft tip. So I gave Martin a 10ft fast tip & a size 8 fly that I tied the night before as I noticed that his flys were on the small size for the river conditions.  Off we set for Lower Ferroch I pointed out a few likely spots but i suggested to focus on the tail end of the pool. Martin cast a long line, I suggested the he speeds the fly up. With a down stream mend and fast figure of eight, and halfway through the swing the line stops. Martin was rewarded with a 5lb grilse. Very fresh but no lice!  After a few photos the fish was on its way.

I received a phone call from liz asking for help as James was into a fish at Grey Mare I shot down and landed a cracking 6lb salmon

A few pictures and the fish was on its way. About 10 min after he was in again, this time landing a 4lb grilse and on a 1” Orange Ally shrimp. I must say what an achievement, 4 fish for his week with only picking up a rod for the 1st time at the beginning of this week. Well done that man!

Sadly the river started rising later afternoon and killed the sport.

Saturday morning the river was sitting at 5’6 and coloured.

Let’s hope this river settles over the weekend & pulls a few fish in.

    Tight lines

    Terry
