This was a good week with 9 salmon & 2 sea trout. Also with several fish lost. A remarkable week considering the weather conditions with hot and sunny weather making for a falling river & Crystal clear water.

Monday morning I met up with Mr & Mrs Nicoll at the Cairnton hut, who were new faces to the beat for 2 days fishing.

Hamish & Penny fished hard with different tactics. Sadly Penny lost a fish in the Grey mare on Tuesday evening.

On Tuesday Chris Inglesfield landed a 15lb salmon on a sunray  shadow at Invercannie for Middle Blackhall side.

Wednesday I invited my father a ghillie from a Upper Drum & Lower Durris up for a cast. I met Jim at the Grey Mare after a few little tweaks of his tackle and a fly from my box, he was on his way. He fished Grey Mare inch by inch without a pull. I suggested we head down to the Cottage pool, the pool looked very fishy. Sitting at 10 inch on the gauge. After a few pointers Jim waded carefully down the pool. “I said this is the cast that will catch you a fish”  Sadly I was a cast to early. When all of a sudden his reel was screaming a beautiful 7lb sea liced fish was heading down the pool. This was a proud moment for myself as it was his 1st fish from my beat & also his 1st fish this season on a Willie Gunn size 3 cm with a 10ft slow sink tip.

Thursday, I met up with Jon mouncey & Bernard & his friend André who were fishing for 3 days

I started Bernard & André on the top of the beat.

I suggested Jon would tag with myself as he was looking for his first fish from the beat. I set up Jon with a full floating line and a 1.5 cm Dee sheep & off we set for Rockheads.  It didn’t take Jon long before he was grinning from ear to ear with a cracking long tail sea liced salmon weighing 8lb. After a few photos the fish was on it way.

Friday morning, the weather was against us with temperatures sitting at 24c.  I Suggested that in the afternoon it would be best leaving the pools to rest Until that evening once the sun had gone off the water.

I suggested on Saturday an early morning start would a good idea.  Bernard & André would start a 4 am on the top of the beat. Bernard would start in the Upper Ferroch. He was rewarded with a 9lb salmon on a floating line.  Unfortunately André lost 3 fish in the Grey mare.

Over at Middle Blackhall I invited Grahame Reid out for a cast Grahame got on the scoresheet with a 11lb salmon with sealice from the Malt Steep using a floating with a cascade.

This week I fished hard in the evening on both sides. On Monday evening At 22.45  i landed a salmon 7lb, photographed by my father, from Rockheads using a size 12 Silver stoat on a 10ft intermediate tip.  With the same set up I landed a 3 lb sea trout from the tail of the pool. Around 23.15.

On Wednesday I caught a fresh 7lb salmon from Rockheads early morning on a floating line with a small 1.5 cm Dee sheep.

I fished the cottage pool in the evening were I had my Second fish a 8lb salmon with sea lice on the same set up around 22.15.

Thursday I lost a salmon after a good 10 min tug of war from the floating bank at last light using a sunray.

Throughout the beat I’ve been seeing a few resident fish this week so I hope the weather is a little kinder to us. Fingers crossed for some good sport this week coming.

    Tight lines Terry
