This week had a good start with 10 salmon & 7 sea trout, with several fish lost. The river was at a cracking height on the Cairnton gauge 1’9", water temperature 53f.

Monday morning I met with Iain Wilson’s  party who had taken both banks & fished 6 Rods.

First to arrive at the Cairnton hut was Mr W Meen. We spoke about tackle over a cup of coffee. I said to Will we will catch fish this week.  I Suggested we fish with floating line with a 10ft fast sink tip and an 1” Willie Gunn. Will started at the Middle Ferroch and it wasn’t long before the reel was screaming. After a good tug of war I slipped the net under a fin perfect salmon weighing 16lb

Iain Wilson started at  Middle Blackhall in the Malt steep, Rockheads.  As per normal Iain was in to a salmon round the 15lb mark. After, a photo the fish was on its way. Iain continued the rest of the pool where on his 3rd cast he was in again. This time landing a 8lb sea liced fish. He was using a 10ft fast sink tip and one of his favourites, a puppy dog.

Late Monday night the river started to rise, which put the fish off the take. The river started dropping again on Tuesday.

Wednesday it was quiet due to the rise in the river the night before. Late evening, Brian Lile caught a 6lb salmon from the Grey mare. With an intermediate tip and a copper willie Gunn.

Thursday morning the river looked in good shape, the water temperature had raised to 60f. The border Osprey Iain Wilson was in the mood. He caught a cracking 8lb salmon from the cottage pool  followed by a 3lb Sea trout. Iain fished the Upper Ferroch mid day when he landed a 13lb salmon and after a few photos the fish was on its way. I met up with Iain at the tail of Middle Ferroch after lunch. We sat and changed flys. Iain looked up river and pointed at a stone where he suggested that it was  the place where his 3rd salmon was coming from and off he set.  I sat and watched Iain carefully wade out to this rock. He dropped his lightly dressed black & yellow tube in the water. At that moment I looked down river for a few seconds and as I turned to look up river, Iain’s rod buckled over by an very unhappy salmon that was heading up steam. After a long battle it was in the net, a cracking 10lb salmon.

Over at Middle Blackhall George Chang landed a 12 salmon from Invercannie & a sea trout.

Mal Copper & Mark  Mcgillivary landed a sea trout each one from Grey mare & the other from Malt steep.

Saturday morning Chris Pringle caught a 6lb salmon from Invercannie from the south bank. On a size 12 shrimp

Saturday evening Iain caught a 6lb salmon from the Upper Ferroch using a sunray

Mark Mcgillivary landed a 3lb Sea trout from the Cottage pool. Well done lads

I hope the river doesn’t drop off over the weekend so that next week my fisher will get some good sport.

    Tight lines
