Fishing conditions in the past week were pretty good with the water height sitting between 1'4" and 1'6" and the river temp 38f on Mon & Tues then rising to 40f for the rest of the week. The rods we had fished it very hard with all densities of lines & various flies but only kelts being landed, mainly in Middle & Lower Ferroch. As I write this week we are looking at the first spate of the season which is what we've been needing to change things around when it settles back but with heavy rain forecast it could be a few days.

The week started off with the river sitting at 9" on Cairnton Gauge and the water temp still very cold at 36f and a cold east wind blowing. Conditions pretty much stayed that way until Friday when the river rose to 1' 3" then to 1' 6" on Saturday and the water temp up to 38f which I thought would have got us on the score sheet as the rods we had fished Cairnton a number of years and knew all the places but only kelts being landed but with some fish being caught on beats below its always encouraging, so maybe next week.
Cheers Brian.

The week started off with the river sitting at 1' and the water temp still a very cold 36f but looking good. We had a very good party of Swedish anglers fishing who really knew what they were doing and certainly put the hours in, however only one was landed by Jonas Runnberg in Invercannie, a cracking 15lber on Wednesday (pictured below). Fish were lost in the Cottage on Monday and a fish was lost at the bank in the Grey Mare on Friday and the usual one or two kelts were landed each day but we are needing a lift in water level and water temps before things improve I think .
Cheers Brian

My prediction a few weeks ago of seeing the first Oyster Catchers and spring might be round the corner were dismissed last week as we had day time temps struggling to get above freezing and blizzard conditions every day blowing in on a strong east wind. This didn't help the fishing but it wasn't through lack of effort, Alistair Shiach from Kirkcaldy had a cracking Sea Trout from Grey Mare on Monday at 3lb and that was all that was landed for the week apart from a few Kelts. We could do with a wee lift in the water now which I'm sure would help but with the winter conditions to continue until at least Friday it could be another hard week . Hopefully thing's will change soon.

Last week started off not too bad apart from a bit of grue on Monday morning but it cleared fairly quickly to give reasonable fishing conditions apart from the bitter east wind that didn't let up all week but that is spring fishing & it's not meant to be easy.
After a few half hearted offers on Monday, which were probably kelts, it was Tuesday before a fresh 9 pounder was landed & a slightly bigger fish was lost in Upper Ferroch on a 1" Willie Gunn copper tube. A lovely fish was lost in Sandy Bay on Thursday so with a bit of luck it might have been a couple more. The forecast for the coming week is for snow & easterly winds which is the opposite of last years temps for the same week, the conditions last year were with the river bone low & water temp at 48f but I'm still hopefull we'll be among a few fish soon .
Cheers Brian

This week last year we started to see fresh fish going through, so I was very hopeful to see some caught/landed this week, especially with a good rise of water on Sunday night. The rods we had were very good fishers and covered the water well with all sorts of lines and flies but although we did see the odd clean fish it was only kelts that were landed up until Thursday when Joe McGinty, fishing with Tom Blacks party, landed a lovely 8lb fresh fish from the Long Jetty (pictured below). Stewart Beveridge landed a small Sea Trout in Invercannie so at least that ended our 2 week drought of fish. Although things are a bit slow at the moment I am sure the fish will arrive, maybe a slight rise in water temperature will help although as you will see from the second picture below, taken this afternoon, I don't think it is going to rise too quickly.
Cheers Brian

The week started off with the river height on Cairnton gauge at 1’4” and lovely spring like weather. Conditions pretty much stayed like that all week with a slight drop in water height on Friday to 1’1” but rising to 1’6” on Saturday with a bit of snow melt, so things really looked good for a fish or two but again only kelts being landed.
With a good forecast for the coming week and a capable party of fishers arriving I’m hopeful for better sport.
Cheers Brian
