What a contrast in weather condition's compared to the previous week, with daily air temperatures getting into the high teens and low twenties which gave us a slight rise in water height each day with some snow melt and a rising water temperature certainly made it very pleasant. Our party on Middle Blackhall led by Pontus Gunlycke from Sweden did have success with Anders Holgesson landing a nice fish of 8lb in Rock Heads on Friday on a 1" Dee Monkey. They also connected with a few more throughout their week and were unlucky not to land more. Over on the Cairnton bank a nice fish of about 7.5lb was landed in the Malt Steep on Monday and although we did see one or two each day it was Saturday that Louis Middleton landed a cracking 8lb fish in the Colonel on a Cascade. The river height is still looking good today at 1ft 9ins and as long as it doesn't fall away too much we should have a good chance of a fish this week.

This past week again we had very good fishing condition's for Cairnton and Middle Blackhall with the water height around 1ft 8ins most days and the water temperature at 40f/42f but the wind was a bit of a pain, however it did not deter our Norwegian visitors to the beat who not only fished it until darkness and through the odd blizzard or two but were also staying with us in our self catering lodges. Although we were seeing the odd one or two clean fish each day there were still some kelts about which we had to settle for but they should get less as the month goes on with the water temperature creeping up. The river height was sitting at 3ft 1ins this morning but falling a bit now and hopefully this brings some fish in for the coming week and gets April started for us.

We still have some availability throughout the year for both fishing and accommodation so please check Fish Pal or contact Sarah Brogan sarah@cairntonestate.co.uk to enquire.

Condition's on the river this past week were very good for us with a really good fishing height for most of the pools and the water temperature varying between 40f and 42f with excellent clarity, the only thing that hampered us was the wind on occasions. I thought we might have done better but I was happy to see Allan Gowers landing a fish of about 7 1/2lb in Lower Ferroch on Thursday. Allan's fish was on a size 7 Cascade and carrying long tailed lice so it wasn't hanging about. There are still a few kelts lying about so they should slow up anything fresh coming through for a while and give the rods a better chance. The forecast is for some wintry and rain showers over the next couple of days so we should not run out of water.

A much better start to the week than the one before with two fish landed on Monday for Dee regular Ian Wilson. One of about 6lb from Middle Ferroch and the other from Glister about 8lb, both fish were on a 1" Posh Tosh. Tuesday Vittorio Spasciani landed a lovely 11lb fish in Kelpie on Middle Blackhall side and lost another after a short time, both were on a 1" Dee Monkey. Condition's the rest of the week were very good but surprisingly we blanked although we did see the odd fish each day but they were not interested. This coming week looks fairly promising if the height doesn't fall away too much.

Other good news is that Fish Pal have now merged the Cairnton & Middle Blackhall pages so you can now see the information & availability of both banks on one page. http://www.fishpal.com/Scotland/Dee/CairntonAndMiddleBlackhall/?dom=Pal

This past week produced the best catches on the river so far this season with fish being landed below and above us which by the law of averages might have happened sooner but it was not until Saturday that John Webb landed a very fresh fish of between 8 and 9lb in Lower Ferroch on a 1.1/2 gold bodied Willie Gunn. John, being a very experienced angler, did the right thing picturing the fish in the net in the water before releasing it. Condition's were pretty good most of the week apart from Friday with the river running quite big and dirty after Thursday's rain. There is a bit of light rain forecast tonight but hopefully the height will stay steady for the start of the week.

March got off to a good start on Middle Blackhall with two very fresh fish being landed by Dee regular Andy Ashcroft. On Tuesday Andy landed a 9lb fish in the Malt Steep and on Saturday he also landed an 8lb fish in Canary, both fish were on a Gold bodied Willie Gunn Tube. It was a good fishing height for both banks but favouring Middle Blackhall bank later in the week as the water rose. Although the odd fish was seen they were not hanging about. It's a fairly big water today and hopefully it's brought a few fish in.

Well that's the first month of the season over and it wasn't too bad for us with 7 fish being landed. 6 from Cairnton and 1 from Middle Blackhall which has been a learning process for myself and the rods but made a bit easier crossing over by boat rather than the 25min drive round. It's been really good to fish pools from either bank depending on water height and wind which the rods have been happy to try. Anyway back to last week which was surprisingly quiet considering the good water height but Lee Craig from Carham on the Tweed landed a lovely wee fish of 6lb in Sandy Bay on Friday and that was it for February. March would normally see things improve so hopefully with the rise today it shall get off to a good start.
