This was a challenging week due to the rise in water most of the week. But we managed 2 salmon & 3 sea trout.
Monday morning the river was over 3’6” on the beats gauge & carrying a lot of colour. I had new clients on the beat, Mr J Craven-Smith & his family over at Middle Blackhall. I met James & his son Henry at the hut we walked the beat & spoke about lines, flys ect. We got started in the malt steep. We fished it well but sadly no offers.
Tuesday the river had dropped over night and was reading 2’9 on the gauge.
Henry started in the malt steep with a floating line with an extra superfast sink tip with a copper tube monkey. He landed a 3 lb sea trout on his 1st run down the pool. In the afternoon Henry struck lucky with a 12lb salmon from the tail of the pool. The salmon had been in the river for a week or two.
On Wednesday Mr J .C smith caught a fresh sea trout from the Kelpie using a copper Willie Gunn, on his last run down the pool before heading home.
Thursday I had Micheal McCanenay and two friend over at blackhall.
Sadly Micheal lost a salmon in the Malt Steep. He was using a willie Gunn on Fast sink tip.
Friday night Bob lost a cracking salmon at the net again in the malt steep.
On Saturday the river started rising which killed it.
On the Cairnton bank My fishers were Mr C Auld who again were 1st visitors to the beat. Sadly the height of the river favoured Blackhall But we stuck at it we seen a few fish heading and tailing.
On Wednesday Neil Maclead landed a fresh sea trout from the Middle Ferroch using a size 8 yellow Ally shrimp on a fast sink tip.
Friday afternoon Torbjorn Anderson from Sweden fished at Cairnton and caught a fresh 10lb salmon from the Malt steep using a sink 2/3 with one of my favourites, a 7cm Orange Samurai. Tobjorn fished the beat very well he wasn’t frightened to use different tactics.
I hope river levels, drop over the weekend so we can fish the beat properly.

This was a disappointing week with only 2 salmon and 3 sea trout, for both banks.
At the start of the week the river was reading 9 inches on the cairnton gauge.
On Monday night I caught a cracking 2 lb sea trout in the long pool, using a 1’ copper willie gun.
Due to the heavy rain the river started rising on Tuesday. It was carrying a lot of colour & started dropping on Wednesday. It looked promising for the tail end of the week. On Thursday I invited Andy and Grahame to fish at Middle Blackhall.
Grahame was rewarded with a 7lb sea lice salmon from the Malt steep using a size 8 Casade, Andy was also on the scoresheet with a 2lb sea trout, using a willie gun tube.
On the Cairnton bank I had James Madden & Mike Richardson who fished the full week on the north bank.
Sadly Mike Richardson hooked and lost a fish in Grey mare on the Saturday morning.
James caught a fresh sea trout around 2lb in Invercannie using a slow sink tip with a black & blue shrimp. James was also rewarded with a 10lb salmon from the Grey Mare using the same set up.
Let’s hope the river settles over the weekend and pull’s in fish from the beats below.

This was a challenging week due to the sunny weather & lower water conditions & a rise in water temperature.
On Monday, Martin Hawkins fished Middle Blackhall for 3 days. I met with Martin at the hut and we discussed tackle so small flies and lighter nylon should do the Business.
We walked the beat together and i pointed out the likely spots. The Malt steep looked very fishy. So I suggested that he started at the head of the pool with a floating line with a size 10 black/ yellow. He was rewarded with a 2lb Sea trout from the taking point.
On the Cairnton bank my fishers were Mr & Mrs Richens who I met many years ago at the start of my ghilling career. It was nice to catch up with them.
They fished for 3 days, we seen fish a mix of salmon & sea trout in various pools but sadly no offers.
Giles Field & his friend fished over at Middle Blackhall for 4 days.
Thursday night Giles landed a sparkling 2lb sea trout from Rockhead fishing a Floating line with 12 foot tapered leader and a size 12 editor into the last light.
I hope this rain changes the river levels and water temperature over the weekend.

The vivid greens of the trees and landscape around Cairnton and Middle Blackhall against the blue skies this week really have been stunning and make fishing even more of a pleasure and although it is raining and a bit grey today it is still beautiful.

This was a week with two halves. The first part of the week was productive with three salmon caught.
The first part of the week I had Arni Baldursson fish with his family & friends.
Monday morning Arni was in the action with a stunning 9lb salmon from the Upper Ferroch using a full floating line with a monkey.
Arni’s daughter Vala Arnadottir started fishing on the Wednesday and was in on the action within the 1st hr landing a Beautiful 13lb from the old garden using a floating line and a tungsten conehead black/yellow.
Arni also caught a 11lb from the Grey Mare using the same set up.
On Thursday the River had risen from the rain up the valley. But it was carrying a heavy peat stain. Unfortunately it put the fish off the take. Let’s hope the rise pulls fresh fish in over the weekend.
