This was a disappointing week with only two Grilse being landed. One by Ross Macdonald in the Cottage pool on a 3” collie dog on Thursday. A few others were hooked and lost throughout the week.

On Saturday I caught up with Simon Foster in the Upper Ferroch around 5. I suggested he head down to Grey mare, I looked in his fly box, a small executioner size 14 caught my eye. I pointed out the hotspot and left him to it. I was delighted to catch up with him later where he showed me a picture of a 4 lb grilse.

A very frustrating week seeing fresh fish and also residents in the pools.

Hopefully we get a change in weather.

Let’s hope next week we have better luck.

This was a week with two halves. The first part of the week was productive with 4 salmon and 6 grilse.

The first part of the week  I had Eugene Burzle and his friend at Cairnton for 3 days. In the party was Ross macdonald and also Ian & Katrina Wood. The water was reading 0’3 inch on the cairnton gauge.

It didn’t take Ross long before he was in the action with a grilse in Middle Ferroch with a size 13 wee brown pig, med fast tip/tapered leader. Following this with his second grilse in the Grey mare with size 11 Silver Shrimp int tip tapered leader. Sadly Eugene hooked a fish in the Rockheads but it snapped him.

On Tuesday Ross started in the Grey Mare with a Silver Shrimp intermediate tip with a tapered leader where he was rewarded with his 3rd fish a 4lb sea liced grilse .

Ian wood was in on the action with a cracking 8lb salmon from Glisters on a skated sunray.

On Tuesday night the fishers weren’t fishing. I decided I would have a cast for an hour. I waited for the last light and it didn’t take me long before I was having a game of tug of war on a 9’6 rod. After about 5 minutes I beached a sea liced grilse in the cottage pool. Stripping a home made tungsten sunray shadow. After a few pictures the fish was on its way.  A few cast’s later I was into a salmon this time very fresh but no sea lice.

On Wednesday Ross caught a fish in the Cottage Run with a 3” collie Dog with intermediate tip.

A big well done To Ross Macdonald.

Ian wood caught a cracking 12lb salmon in the Invercannie  on a size 11 Durris shrimp.

On Thursday I met Paul West and his party at Cairnton hut, sadly no fish to report at lunch. After lunch paul’s brother in law Bob Kenyon caught a stunning 18 lb salmon in the Glister on a medium sink tip and a cascade.

Paul West caught a 16 lb salmon  from the cottage pool later Saturday night.

Unfortunately the River  had risen from the rain up the valley so it put the fish off the take.

Let’s hope the rise pulls fish in over the weekend

    This was a productive week with 3 salmon & 3 Grilse and a 3lb Sea trout .

This week the Cairnton’s gauge started off at 7 inch after thunder and lightning from the Saturday night.

Monday morning was a busy day with two different fishing parties on both banks.

On the Cairnton bank I met with Tim Lawson and his 2 Friends Peter and Nigel with the 4th rod arriving on Thursday This was only the party’s second time on the beat. After a coffee I suggested a floating line with a small intermediate tip and a fly with colour like a willie Gunn or a cascade as the river was carrying a stain from the weekend rise. After listing the pools that were fishing, off the team head on the hunt for Silver.

I headed over to middle Blackhall to meet Keith lovelock and his team who were fishing for 3 days. The team hadn’t fished the beat before. I suggested that we walk down the bottom part of the beat, pointing out all the likely spots. We agreed to leave the top of the beat until after lunch, to save waiting for the opposition from cairnton.

I headed back to cairnton around lunch time.

Sadly no fish up to this point.

After lunch i met up with David Morgan at the Middle Blackhall hut and off we set to the floating bank. It didn’t take David long before he caught the beats first Grilse on an in  line with an intermediate tip & a size 12 cascade. Sadly that’s all the sport over on the south bank.

On Tuesday Tim Lawson caught a 12lb salmon from the Upper Ferroch on a size 10 stoats tail

Wednesday Nigel caught a 3lb Sea trout from the spout on a slow sink tip and a snake fly at 23.45

Thursday I suggested we use small dark flys like a Crathie or a stoats tail as the water had dropped to -2 on the Cairnton Gauge.

The New arrival. Remy Martin’s first time on the beat. Tim stressed that Remy hasn’t caught a salmon in 4 season’s and asked if I could spend time with him.

I asked to see Remys fly box’s. On the 3rd box a lightly dressed size 12 silver hooked red Francis caught my eye. Off we set for the middle of the beat, Spout then the Cottage pool.

We had no interest in the spout so off we set for the cottage pool. After a few little pointers he was on his way. A few casts in then he was in but sadly it spat the hook . 10 mins down pool the pool i slipped the net under a 12 lb salmon. After a few photographs it was on its way to continue its journey.  A few casts later this fish shot down the pool shot out the water and sadly departed.

Peter was in the action with a 5lb Grilse on a 14 Crathie in the Grey mare.

Remy also caught a 10lb salmon on Friday night at 23.00 in the tail of the potters on a size 14 crathie.

On Saturday it only left Nigel to get on the scoresheet with a salmon. I suggested he fished Grey mare with a small black, blue, silver type character. And headed down the beat. I was absolutely delighted on arriving back to the hut and Nigel was all smile’s he caught a 5 lb sea lice Grilse from the Grey Mare.

I am delighted everyone caught a fish on such hard weather conditions.

Here’s hoping we get some rain over the weekend.

This was a good week with 9 salmon & 2 sea trout. Also with several fish lost. A remarkable week considering the weather conditions with hot and sunny weather making for a falling river & Crystal clear water.

Monday morning I met up with Mr & Mrs Nicoll at the Cairnton hut, who were new faces to the beat for 2 days fishing.

Hamish & Penny fished hard with different tactics. Sadly Penny lost a fish in the Grey mare on Tuesday evening.

On Tuesday Chris Inglesfield landed a 15lb salmon on a sunray  shadow at Invercannie for Middle Blackhall side.

Wednesday I invited my father a ghillie from a Upper Drum & Lower Durris up for a cast. I met Jim at the Grey Mare after a few little tweaks of his tackle and a fly from my box, he was on his way. He fished Grey Mare inch by inch without a pull. I suggested we head down to the Cottage pool, the pool looked very fishy. Sitting at 10 inch on the gauge. After a few pointers Jim waded carefully down the pool. “I said this is the cast that will catch you a fish”  Sadly I was a cast to early. When all of a sudden his reel was screaming a beautiful 7lb sea liced fish was heading down the pool. This was a proud moment for myself as it was his 1st fish from my beat & also his 1st fish this season on a Willie Gunn size 3 cm with a 10ft slow sink tip.

Thursday, I met up with Jon mouncey & Bernard & his friend André who were fishing for 3 days

I started Bernard & André on the top of the beat.

I suggested Jon would tag with myself as he was looking for his first fish from the beat. I set up Jon with a full floating line and a 1.5 cm Dee sheep & off we set for Rockheads.  It didn’t take Jon long before he was grinning from ear to ear with a cracking long tail sea liced salmon weighing 8lb. After a few photos the fish was on it way.

Friday morning, the weather was against us with temperatures sitting at 24c.  I Suggested that in the afternoon it would be best leaving the pools to rest Until that evening once the sun had gone off the water.

I suggested on Saturday an early morning start would a good idea.  Bernard & André would start a 4 am on the top of the beat. Bernard would start in the Upper Ferroch. He was rewarded with a 9lb salmon on a floating line.  Unfortunately André lost 3 fish in the Grey mare.

Over at Middle Blackhall I invited Grahame Reid out for a cast Grahame got on the scoresheet with a 11lb salmon with sealice from the Malt Steep using a floating with a cascade.

This week I fished hard in the evening on both sides. On Monday evening At 22.45  i landed a salmon 7lb, photographed by my father, from Rockheads using a size 12 Silver stoat on a 10ft intermediate tip.  With the same set up I landed a 3 lb sea trout from the tail of the pool. Around 23.15.

On Wednesday I caught a fresh 7lb salmon from Rockheads early morning on a floating line with a small 1.5 cm Dee sheep.

I fished the cottage pool in the evening were I had my Second fish a 8lb salmon with sea lice on the same set up around 22.15.

Thursday I lost a salmon after a good 10 min tug of war from the floating bank at last light using a sunray.

Throughout the beat I’ve been seeing a few resident fish this week so I hope the weather is a little kinder to us. Fingers crossed for some good sport this week coming.

    Tight lines Terry
