This was a week with two halves. The first part of the week was disappointing with a rising river, carrying a lot of colour. But we had one salmon on the Wednesday from the Middle blackhall caught by Graham Westgarth in the floating bank with a fast sink tip & a size 8 cascade.
This week at Cairnton i caught up with the two teams John Marshall with his two friends Mark and Jane who have fished the beat before.
And the other 2 rods were new fishers too the beat David & Patrick Coote.
John Marshall caught a cracker of a salmon on Friday from the Grey mare using a floating line with 10ft 7ips & a size 10 cascade.
On Saturday the beat gauge was at the good height 1’7 with a little peat stain.
Jane started in the Grey Mare with a floating spey with a size 8 Willie Gunn. She was rewarded with a 10lb salmon. Sadly her phone was in her vehicle. But she kept a scale that was on the rocks from being landed by herself.
Saturday afternoon I spent time with Patrick who wasn’t getting on with this Spey casting. I give Patrick a shooting head system with a 10ft fast sink tip and a cascade from my fly box & off we set for Grey Mare. After a few pointers he was casting well. I explained the wading line and the taking places. Then off I set for middle blackhall. I was delighted as I returned to the malt steep hut, Patrick was standing with a smile from ear to ear. He landed a salmon at the tail of the pool. His 1st salmon this season. A fresh salmon, around the 15lb mark. Sadly with the excitement he dropped his phone in the river. But the salmon was returned safely.
The water is looking promising for the week ahead. It will be good to catch up with friends from down south who are fishing the 1st part of the week. Let’s hope the fish play co-operate.

It was with great sadness to hear yesterday that retired Cairnton ghillie Dave Cowie had passed away after his fight with cancer. Dave was a huge part of the history at Cairnton as well as his father before him and we are sure many of you who fished with Dave will have a tale or two to tell about your time on the river with him over the years. The Taylor family and all the staff at Cairnton Estate send our sincere condolences to his wife Janet and his family at this difficult time.

This was a good week for the Danish team. Fishing with old school fly patterns from back in the days of A.H.E Woods. The Blue charm on singles & size 10 ,12 doubles with long tapered leader on floating line & casting at 45 degrees then letting it swing.
Once that become ineffective the team would switch to size 10,12 Hairy Marys with a sunray close by just in case of emergences. The Cairnton bank landed 5 salmon and 7 Grilse for the week with the same again lost at the net. With a hand full of clean fish being hooked & landed.
This week I met with kim Michelson and his two friends Peter Jensen and Per Larsen at the Upper Ferroch hut. The beat was at a perfect height 1’1 on the the beat’s gauge. Water temperature 58f. The weeks forecast was dry with rain towards the latter part of the week. The week looked promising especially with the numbers of fish I seen throughout the beat at the tailend of the week before.
I pointed out a few pools that would fish then we decided to split the beat into three.
Kim started in the old garden heading down Stream. Peter started in the Cottage pool & Par started in the Grey mare. Monday was a slow day with only 1 fish being landed by Kim in the old garden with a size 10 blue charm on a long tapered leader.
The star of the week was Per Larsen who caught 6 fish and landing the biggest being 18lb, from the Grey mare on a Blue charm.
A big well done to the 3 fisherman.
Saturday afternoon the river started rising and sadly it killed the sport.
Fingers crossed this rise will pull in a few fresh salmon.

This was a frustrating week due to an upset in water levels. We managed 2 grilse & 1 salmon.
Sadly the unsettled water put the fish off the take.
This week I had a ghillie friend John Simm from the Tyne fishing Cairnton. On Tuesday John caught a 13lb salmon from Glisters on a home tied 1’ white willie Gunn with a fast sink tip.
Andy Ashcroft caught a grilse from the Kelpie on a Willie Gunn tube & a sink tip.
I caught a 5lb grilse with long tailed sea liced on a Triple Density F,H,I with a 10ft fast sink tip and a 1’ copper Willie Gunn.
We hooked a few others throughout the week, but couldn’t get them landed.
On Saturday the beat was looking fishy, 1’3 on the beat gauge. I had friends up from Newcastle, Lucinda & Gary. The pair fished the beat hard. We seen a lot of activity throughout the beat. Lucinda had a chase from a salmon on a sunray in the Lower Ferroch but it didn’t stick.
The river is dropping back nicely so fingers crossed we have good week.

This was a frustrating week with a nice height of water but there was lots of grass to be cutting, but we still managed 4 grilse, 2 salmon and a 2lb sea trout
On Monday I caught a lovely grilse in the colonels with a 1”
Willie Gunn on a 10ft tip. I then lost 2 in the lower Ferroch.
Wednesday Tim larkman caught a cracking 16lb from Glisters using a red Francis & a fast tip.
Wednesday evening I caught a clean 12lb hen fish at the tail of the Grey mare on last light using a triple density shooting head a Float, hover, intermediate with a 10ft fast tip & a 1” copper willie Gunn.
On Thursday Ian Johnston caught a sea trout from Glisters on a red Francis.
I invited Martin Hayward up for a cast over at Middle Blackhall he caught a 4lb grilse from the Malt steep on a copper willie Gunn.
Friday evening I caught a 6lb fish from the tail of the Lower Ferroch on a sunray with a Constant strip.Just before the rise.
Saturday afternoon I caught up with Chris Johnston In Grey Mare I suggested we head up to Lower Ferroch where it looked fishy. After a few points Chris was on his way. 10 minutes down the pool he was rewarded with a grilse around the 4lb mark.
The river is dropping back nicely fingers crossed we have good week.
