Mixed fortune's this week, one fisher who had never used a double handed rod landed a fish in the first hour, a 5lb grilse in the Cottage, his mate landed one in the Grey Mare on his last cast, a 7 pounder, well done Alan and Scott.
On Tuesday the fishers all landed fish, Iain had his in the Upper Ferroch, Greg got his in Invercannie and Peter landed one in the Cottage, well done to you all.
On Thursday one of the fishers got off to a great start landed two fish within twenty minutes of starting, well done Alan, his fishing mate tried very hard with no luck, your turn next time Jack.
We were blank the last two day's, I think the fish were telling us to leave them alone to get on with their breeding. We even had a piper playing outside the Ferroch hut yesterday and that didn't stir them up, thank's Mark.
One of our regular fisher's Norman who caught the final fish last year and the first fish of thie season was unable to connect, hard luck to all the fishers.
It is sad to be writing my last report, it hasn't sunk in yet. I got a real surprise last night when I was presented with a lovely book from Orri Vigfusson, I was speechless, thanks to who ever organised that.
It was a good night, Orri is doing a great job trying to protect the Atlantic salmon and deserve's all the support he can get.
Don't know when it finished, but Dug and Norman were still playing their mouth organ's when I left.
Finally I would like to thank all the fisher's and their wives that I have met over the past thirty odd years, I have made lot's of friend's, hope I will meet some of you in the years to come. If you are passing call in past, might get a cup of tea or something a bit stronger.
It's the end of an era, there has been a Cowie ghilling at Cairnton since 1947.
Thanks to everyone who wrote in my book, I look forward to reading it. Please keep in touch, my email is
d.cowie44@btinternet.com
I wish the new ghillie all the best.

The long range forecast last week said we would have lot's of high winds, thankfully they got it wrong, they were also speaking about snow on the hills.
The fish we caught last week averaged about 15lbs, all coloured and mostly hen's.
One fisher from Elgin, who decided to have final run through the Grey Mare was rewarded with a fish of 9lbs as it was his last day's fishing of the season he stopped, not many people will catch a fish on their last cast of the year, well done David.
One of our regular fishers in his mid eighties, landed two salmon in the Grey Mare 16 and 19 lbs had a bit of a struggle with the big one, ghillie at the bottom of the beat, well done Douglas.
The Grey Mare produced another two fish on Thursday,15 and 13lbs, to a retired ghillie from lower down the river, well done Fred.
The other fish was caught in the Old Garden 15lbs, well done Callum.
We have not seen so many fish at the end of the week, water a lot colder, we had some rain yesterday but it seems a bit warmer today, might get a rise in water level.
The report might be late next week, I have a night out on Saturday at Potties.

A very disappointing week for fishing, seeing plenty, but they are proving difficult to catch, could be the high water temperature that has put them off. The water was 12 degree's higher than the previous week, getting colder this week.
It was great weather for being a ghille, even the butterflies were out.
We had two fishers decided to have a dip this week, the first in the Upper Salt Vat, not once but four times, luckily Maggie wasn't hurt.
The second fisher who caught the only fish for the week in the Garden Run had waded all through the Ferroch's and then stumbled in the Grey Mare, again no injuries, well done Alistair, for catching a fish. I didn't witness any of the dip's, saw the wet waders.
Had a lot of rain last night, river up a bit, hope it puts the fish in a taking mood.

We had mostly good weather this week, apart from Wednesday, windy and some very heavy showers at lunchtime, once the rain passed the wind dropped and it turned out fine.
We had two regular fishers all week and their day guest's, on Friday one of the guest's caught a fish in the Mid Ferroch, a 11lb cock with a big kype which caught on the landing, bit of a struggle but we made it, well done Euan.
The other fishers caught four salmon and one grilse, John had one salmon and a fresh grilse, which was a bit thin, his fishing partner Jane landed three salmon, one of 20lbs slightly coloured, but she caught a really fresh 9lb one in the Cottage yesterday, a beautiful surface take, well done to you both.
The weather is supposed to be settled this week with little rain.
Off to watch Scotland beat Argentina, I hope.

No shortage of water this week 3ft 6ins on Monday down to 2ft on Friday then up to 6ft 6ins yesterday, no fishing until after 3 o'clock when the river had dropped back to under 5ft. One of the fishers landed 2 salmon, one in the Mid Ferroch 8lbs, the other in the Grey Mare 16lbs which he landed after a struggle in the Holly Bush helped by Malcolm, who got very wet landing the fish, I missed all the excitement, well done David.
On Tuesday we got 2 salmon, first to Ciaran in the Long Jetty 16lbs, the second to James in Mid Ferroch 25lbs, our heaviest of the season, well done to you both.
We also caught a nice fresh grilse on Thursday in the Grey Mare, well done Ken.
Rained a lot yesterday afternoon and still been some showers today,oh for some dry weather.
The swallow's are gathering to start their journey south, winter is just around the corner brrrrr.

We had a good start to the week two salmon and one grilse, one of the salmon was 19lbs caught in Glister by Graham, he also had a grilse in Canary, well done.
Another new fisher to Cairnton landed a nice fresh 6lb fish in the Grey Mare, her husband and his fishing buddy didn't manage to land anything, well done Caroline.
The Rock Head's proved an exciting place this week, I was just about to net my second fish of the year when my wading stick got stuck between some rock's, I went clattering down almost into the river, first thing I did was have a look round to see if anybody was watching, thankfully not, I landed a nice fresh 7lbs salmon.
Yesterday a fisher went out to the Rock Heads, and almost straight away he hooked a fish, I got a phone call from the ghillie on the opposite bank so went down to help, he had been playing the fish for about 25mins, when it decided to go down the rapids, he got it turned and it started to come back up unfortunately it rolled over in the heavy water and came off, Iain and his dog Poppy were very disappointed, I think it would have been around 15lbs, Hard luck Iain.
I had an evening off last night my son's engagement party, feeling a bit fragile today, must have been something I ate.
The river rose very quick last night and we are supposed to get the tail end of a hurricane tomorrow, more rain.

We had three regular fisher's from Denmark this week, they fished long hour's and had a good week.
Jorn had one salmon, a grilse and a sea trout.
Kim had had five salmon, one of 21lbs. He also lost a big fish in the Lower Ferroch, that's not the only thing he lost, he dropped his pipe not sure if it was in the river or on the bank, may find it.
Per was top rod with nine salmon and five grilse. He also hooked two other things, one the back of his head and the other the ghillie, I got one of his fish on the bank in Sandy Bay when the hook came out and went straight into my thumb passed the barb (didn't cry), after a bit of pulling we got it out, glad it's catch and release.
Sixteen of the fish were caught on A.H.E.Woods favorite fly the Blue Charm on a floating line, he would have been impressed. Well done to you all.
Forecast some wind and rain this week, lovely day today will get my grass cut at home.

The fishers stayed on the river late on Monday night and Peter was rewarded with a nice sea trout of 5lbs in the Cottage, the next two days he caught two salmon and a grilse. His fishing partners got one each John had a salmon and Bruce a grilse, both caught in the Cottage, well done to all.
We had three new fishers to Cairnton the second half of the week, they all got their names in the record book, Keith and Mike got a grilse each and Olga had a salmon in the Grey Mare, she was very nervous as she had lost a big fish the day before in the Garden Run, well done.
I got my first salmon of the year thank's to Olga, she wanted a rest so gave me her rod, ten minutes later I hooked a 11 pounder in Glister.
Sadly this week Deeside and further afield lost one of there great stalwart's, Ed Gardyne his knowledge on salmon and their habitat, fishing tackle and water treatment will be sadly missed by many people.
All my sympathy goes to the Gardyne family.

We got off to a good start on Monday, one of the fisher's landed two salmon and lost one, the first in Garden Run second in the Colonel. I arrived at the Ferroch hut to see the fisher taking of his shirt, I started to laugh, but it turned out he hadn't fallen in, when he released his fish it went belly up, luckily he managed to grab it, getting wet in process, well done Norman. His two fishing buddies from Inverness didn't manage to connect, despite having super-duper watches which tell's them everything apart from which fly to put on, hard luck Alan and Alex.
On Wednesday a new fisher to Cairnton who has fished the lower Dee for year's, landed a grilse in the Grey Mare, his fishing partner wasn't so lucky despite fishing until dark, well done John and hard luck Mark.
On Thursday night I went over to see one of the fisher's, I drove up to the top and down to the bottom could not find him, turned out he had fallen in at the Spout and got rather wet and cold so he finished early, some people will do anything to get mentioned on the web site, only joking Trevor.
Another of our regular fisher's started on Friday morning in the Mid Ferroch and got a 3lb sea trout almost straight away, then nothing for the next two day's, well done Ciaran.
hard luck to Jim and Trevor, your turn next time.
The river rose on Thursday and Friday and seem's to have shifted some of our fish.

A week of very changeable weather, sun, rain and even more rain. On Wednesday afternoon it started to rain and forgot to stop, by Thursday morning the river rose to almost 9ft, no fishing, by Friday down to 4ft.
Before the river started to rise two of the fisher's caught fish, Douglas got one in the Upper Ferroch and David one in the Lower Ferroch (16 lbs)he also got one on Tuesday in the Colonel, well done to you both.
Friday was certainly the glorious 12th for one of our fishers, he landed 4 salmon and a sea trout, one of 20lbs which was caught in Sandy Bay, it put up a great fight, well done Graham. Saturday wasn't so good for him unfortunately his keys got locked inside his car, an expert technician came and managed to unlock the car.
One of the other fishers landed a fish on Friday night in the Malt Steep, he caught it on a fly he called a Roxburgh Fancy, never seen one before, should be on a Christmas tree, he said he was going write a pipe tune called Roxburgh,s Fancy, cant wait to hear it, well done Mark.
After a good day on Friday the river rose about 18ins yesterday afternoon, must have put the fish off, seeing plenty in the Ferroch's, but they were not very cooperative.

No fish for the first four days last week, despite seeing lots of fish. One sea trout on Friday from Grey Mare, well done Norman.
Yesterday picked up a lot, one of the fishers who had fished all week managed to connect with a grilse at the top of the Cottage, well done Mike.
The other fishers a father and son, got a salmon each, Thomas got his one in Glister and his father Richard landed his one in the Cottage Run, Richard also lost another in the same pool, well done to you both, but the real triumph was for Karen( Richard's wife} she had never tried salmon fishing, Thomas was teaching her, without a fly at first when she getting the line out OK he put on a fly and second cast she hooked and landed a eight and a half pounder, that sort's out Christmas presents Richard, well done Karen.
It has been raining most of last night, have a big river tomorrow, that maybe the reason the fish were on the take yesterday.

The weather has been quite changeable, some days cold and other's very warm, I don't know if that's what making the fish dour. We are seeing a lot in some places, but try and catch them that's a different matter.
One of the fishers, who has been coming about 12yrs got off to a good start on Monday, a sea trout in the Grey Mare and a 13 pound salmon in the Cottage which gave him a good fight on his single handed rod, he is not so athletic as he used to be. He also got a sea trout yesterday in the Grey Mare, well done John. On Tuesday night he caught his dog, didn't play very well, just one good run and then the hook came out.
The other fish were caught in the Cottage, the fisher's started about 4am and Nick was rewarded with them both, he also caught an eel, bit of a struggle to release it. Bob didn't manage to make contact.
Thursday and Friday was auctioned off to Rafts, but despite putting in lot's of effort Jim and Neil were unlucky.

Where has the summer gone, felt as if we were going to have a frost some of the evenings last week. Strong north wind, glad we are not fishing today supposed to get better next week.
The fishers tried very hard last week, one landed 4 salmon and 1 sea trout, some of which had sea lice, and lost a few, he got hold of a fish in the Grey Mare it went down stream and round a rock, try as he could he wasn't able to release the line, unfortunately the line broke where it joined the backing. I went and got my spinning rod,(first time anybody has spun on Cairnton for years as far as we know), I eventually got the line with my wet cell No2 and two brass tubes, no fish. well done James. The other fisher's weren't so lucky despite fishing himself to exhaustion Ciaran failed to land a fish, your turn next time.

One of the fishers from Wales, who usually fishes for trout landed a 7lb sea liced salmon, his first for 40yrs in the Long Jetty on Tuesday, hope that smile lasted a long time and I hope he bought the drink that evening, well done Tony, and to his other friends Alan and Peter.

We had a lot of rain this week, it started on Wednesday morning and was very heavy most of the day. The river started to rise late afternoon, slowly at first but by early evening it was rising very quick, I went down to the gauge and by the time I drove to the top hut it had risen over 12ins. The level on Wednesday morning was 6ins and it rose to almost 8ft, dropped back to 5ft on Thursday, when we got 4 salmon, well done to Andy, Graham and Iain.
One of the fishers yesterday was given a days fishing from his friends for his birthday . He got hold of a fish in the Garden Run, came off at the last minute, then he had a hold of another in the Grey Mare, fished the Mid Ferroch, lost another at the last minute, finally he landed one in the Mid Ferroch, a beautiful fresh 16 pounder, well done Kevin a day to remember.
On Wednesday when it was pouring down Norman caught a fish in the Cottage Run, well done you deserve a fish for fishing in those conditions.
On Friday I was strimming at the Lower Feroch, looked up and saw the fisher playing a fish in the Mid Ferroch, went up to help him land it, it was coming in nicely when bang his rod snapped,(a lot of leg pulling from his mates) we got the fish 9lb sea liced. The week before he had been fishing at Aberdeen, hooked a finnock and it suddenly went mad, an otter had taken the finnock, he thinks that must have weakened his rod, well done Dave.
Will be late next week with report, going down to see new grandson (Archie)for a few days.

The fish were spread out over the week, two Monday, two Thursday, two Friday and one Saturday, well done to David, Iain. Allen, Fred and Sam. The grilse we caught was a lovely fat four pounder with long tailed sea lice.
The weather today is very hot and sunny, hope it last's a few day's, need to get on with a bit of strimming.

Well done to you all, hard luck to Gilly despite all her effort didn't manage to connect, her husband did get one 12lbs in Upper Ferroch, well done Gunner, also hard luck to Merlin and Sophia.
We got of to an exciting start on Monday, Mona got her line wrapped around her dog on the jetty at the Upper Ferroch, thankfully it didn't do a runner and Janet hooked her arm while fishing Upper Salt Vat, a bit of nylon and a good yank I got it out.

The fishers this week were family members of the old laird,
(W.N.Mitchell), I have known them for many years and in fact taught some of them to fish.
Top rod was Joanna with two salmon, Mark, Gerrard and Alistair had one each, Miranda and Alex got a sea trout each. Pete you must try harder, even Thomas got his first salmon, a parr
Poor Joanna had a bad day on Friday, she lost her wading stick in the Cottage and at night her new puppy decided to have a feed on a pair of waders,I think they are beyond repair, even for Diver Dave.

I think we are in for a bit wet and windy weather at the beginning of the week, hopefully bring more fish in.
There was fresh snow on the hills mid week, one minute you think it is summer then it turns cold again.

The river started to rise Friday night and has came up over 18ins, can only do good.
The fish are still running straight past, not a lot of sea trout showing yet, still a bit early.
The water has been so low and clear, you could see fish lying in certain places, I watched the fly going past with hardly a movement, just one came after the fly in the Cottage, it turned very quickly but unfortunately missed the fly, the fisher felt a slight touch, hard luck Duncan.
Both fish we got this week were hooked within 5mins at the end of the day 21.10 and 21.15, one in Invercannie, a lovely 11 pounder with long tailed sea lice, the other in the Spout had been in a while and had slight seal damage and white spot's on head, well done Thomas and Duggie.
Fish weren't very cooperative the rest of the week.

Another good week for sunbathing, with almost unbroken sunshine, quite hard frost's most mornings.
We could do with some rain to raise the water level, as it is very low for this time of the year, I have been looking back the old records, not many fish have been caught in these conditions.
We had three salmon at the beginning of the week, two of them were sea liced, the other was a small fish that had been in the river for a while. Two of the fisher's on their first visit to Cairnton landed the fish, Jason got one in Invercannie and Chris got two, one in the Grey Mare, the other in the Upper Ferroch which weighed 14lbs a real beauty, well done to you both, and hard to luck Womble.
The fisher at the end off the week tried their best to winkle one out but no luck, they have been coming to Cairnton for 14yrs, second blank year. One of them decided to have a dip in the Spout, at least it didn't take long for his clothes to dry, hope they still fit you Ted.
We had a nasty snag in the middle of the Upper Ferroch, we tried to reach it from both sides with no luck. Diver Dave came out and tied a rope to it, when we got it out we found that it had been cut with a saw, thanks to whoever threw it into the river.
The cuckoo, curlew and the tern all arrived this week.

The week got off to a good start with a nice 12 pounder out of the Upper Salt Vat, unfortunately the fisher fell in twice later on, just as well the water was quite warm. He was back fishing on Wednesday, didn't catch another fish or manage to get his hat-trick of dips, well done Mike.
The other fish, one which was caught in the Cottage, was sea liced and the other in the Upper Ferroch had a very bad seal mark on it, well done to Roger and John.
The water is very warm for this time of the year, we are fishing small flies just now and catching a lot of parr, they are quite small but it is great to see them, as we haven't caught many over the last few years.
The swallows are back, although it has been warmer than usual they are on time.

The fish are still running past us very quickly.
Both fish we caught this week had sea lice, the same fisher landed them both, one in Invercannie the other in the Cottage, well done Phil. His mate Alan wasn't quite so lucky, went for a swim at the Rock Heads,no damage. The rocks are very very slippery.
One of our regular fishers also had a dip in the Cottage, again no damage. Before that he hooked a fish in the Grey Mare, at first he thought it was fresh, but when it was landed, just a very well mended kelt, hard luck Norman.
River is gradually dropping, still a bit snow to come off the hills.

Summer arrived this week, after a cold start on Monday.
It is supposed to get colder this week.
We had a party of fishers from Norway this week, two of them have been coming for 11yrs. They got off to a good start on Monday, landed 2 and lost another in Sandy Bay, well done to Jo Arve, Knut and Jorn, the other Knut who missed the first 3days, didn't get a salmon his total catch was 2 brown trout and a mole. He got a bit closer yesterday lost one and had a few pulls, have to try harder next year Knut. They have all gone home with a suntan.
The trees have started to turn green also the grass has started to grow, great what a bit of heat does.
The sand martins have arrived back, summer must be coming.

Plenty water this week, so no need to wade certainly the last half off the week.
Fish be must running straight through without showing.
The fish we caught weighed 17lbs, from the Plank, it was caught on a single handed rod, A H E Wood would have been proud of you Peter, not sure what he would thought about the fly a sunray shadow. Peter was knackered after playing it, imagine how A H E Wood must have felt after some days 10 fish, and losing a few. Well done Peter.
The other fishers tried very hard with no luck, two of them put in a long hours, I thought I would have to get a pair of night sights just to see them, their only contacts were two brown trout and an offer from a salmon last night you couldn't have tried any harder, Kim and Haken.

We had a lot of high water this week, up to over 7ft on Monday night, lovely sunny warm days. By the end of the week the weather had turned a lot colder, even speaking about more snow on the hills.
There must have been a small run of fish on Friday, two fish caught, one lost and a few pulls, but nothing yesterday, mind you it was very cold and windy, not ideal for fly fishing.
One of the fish we caught weighed about 4lbs, small for a springer, the other weighed 9lbs, both fresh, well done Mike and Howard, hard luck Nigel.

We have got snow free banks again, weather has been quite good a cold wind at times. Not a lot of snow melt so far.
We had a fishing party from Norway this week, one of them had to go back early, they kindly asked me to fish his rod, no luck, sorry Arve I am sure if you had been fishing you would have caught one. The other three got a salmon each, Ole got the first, he also had a sea trout, first of the season for us, well done Ole. One of the other rods who has been coming to Cairnton for nine years, finally got a fish here, well done Knut. The other rod caught his fish in the Garden Run a lovely sea liced fish of 6lbs, well done Roar. I had a problem pronouncing his name, easy when you see how it is spelt.
Looking at the forecast for the week, going to be a bit warmer, so we may get rise in the water level.

Yet another hard week for the fishers, we had some nice days, some very, very windy days and yesterday very heavy snow all day, about 3 to 4ins fell it was quite wet snow which made the riverbanks lethal, a few close shaves.
We caught a nice fish on Tuesday in the Grey Mare, it weighed about 13 to 14lbs, no sea lice but very fresh, well done Sam, first time at Cairnton.
One of the other fisher had a dip on the bottom beat, no witness'es, hope you got dried out Simon.
The daffodil's have started to bloom, they must have got a bit of a shock with the snow yesterday.
Raining today, so let's hope we get a rise in the river and shift some of the fish from lower down, I have heard there are quite a lot lower down.

We had sure footed fishers this week no swimmers, all we caught were a few kelts and a wading stick, well done to Neil for retrieving the stick in the Malt Steep, I saw him in the water and thought he was trying to get to the Rock Heads, raced down to tell him it was too deep.

We had new fishers this week, fishing effort very high despite the river conditions. Three of them managed to land springers, well done Carlo, Alex and Duncan they all came from the Ferrochs. Duncan caught his fish yesterday in the Lower Ferroch it was the best shaped fish I had seen for a while, no sea lice but very fresh and it weighed about twelve and a half lbs. He videoed the fight with a camera on his head, I hope I didn't use any bad language.

The river was at a good level all week, at the end of the week the weather turned very cold, wet and windy, it was very wet yesterday, must have been snow on the hill's as the river didn't rise. The fishers deserved medal's for effort, all they got were three kelts. Not so wet today still cold.

Another fisher wasn't so lucky, he hooked a fish while wading the top of the Lower Ferroch and on the way back to the bank he fell in and dropped his rod, when he picked up his rod the fish had gone, could have been a 20 pounder, a shame Norman that I didn't witness it.

On Wednesday two fishers from Aberdeen were in the right place at the right time at the Mid Ferroch, one had three and the other got one, all within one and a half hours, well done Graham and Andy.
Yesterday the river was very high, it must have been about 7ft at the highest, two of the fishers had travelled up from the south of Scotland for the day thankfully the water level was dropping quite fast so they were able to get a bit of fishing, mostly on the top beat. One fisher from Fraserburgh, who fished with us on the opening day was rewarded with a fish yesterday, a really nice fish of 10lbs from the Lower Ferroch, well done Graham.

One of our regular fishers who has taken the opening day for the last few years, decided to take the last day, and managed to land a grilse yesterday in the Grey Mare, well done Norman.
We saw plenty fish last week, some right across in the shallow water opposite the Ferrochs, think they were getting ready to spawn.

The leaves on the tree are changing colour just now, very picturesque, but if we get a hard frost most of them will fall off.
One of the fishers landed a 20 pounder in the Old Garden, not the best place to land a fish on your own, he is a very competent fisher, just as well as the ghillie was no where to be seen, well done Russell, his mate, on his first trip to Cairnton managed to land a fish in the Mid Ferroch, well done Mike. Very changeable weather this week, a lot of wind and rain which pushed the river level to over 8ft on Friday night, dropped back yesterday to a fishable level, but unfortunately no luck.
One fisher this week who wasn't able to spey cast was fishing Invercannie, hooked the settling tank, I unhitched his fly and held it, told him to cast it out but unfortunately I didn't let it go at the right time, straight it to my thumb past the barb, we got it out no bother the fly had a bit of my blood on it, he went on to catch 3 grilse that day, 2 in Invercannie and 1 in Whitocks, hope other fishers don't expect me to do that everytime they want a fish, don't have enough blood to go round. Well done Richard.
On Friday we had gale force winds, blew down a couple of trees, almost impossible to get a line in the water, only one touch for the day, a few branches caught, ten out of ten for the effort put in by the fishers.

A very good weeks fishing, a lot off the fish were sealiced, fish still running at this level, great.
Most of the fish were caught on Blue Charms, A H E Wood would be proud of you all. One fisher caught 15 fish, another 5 and the other fisher who tried very hard was unlucky not to be in right place at right time, he got 1 grilse and a sea trout. Well done Per, Kim and Jorn.
I landed a fish for Kim in the Lower Ferroch one day, lifted the net but no fish, it had gone through a hole in my net, a lot of hilarity but we managed to get it back, 4lb grilse caught on a No8 low water Black Heron, I could hardly see the dressing.
Thankfully it didn't happen on Tuesday as the fish he caught weighed 22lbs, would have been more difficult to get a hold of it. I have repaired my net.

One of our fishers partner(Salwa)decided to try and get a photo of him, she went a bit closer and stood on a very slippery rock and fell in thankfully she didn't hurt herself, or get her camera wet. One of the fishers saw the otter in the Salt Vat, Miranda was very excited, I also saw the osprey diving for a fish, he didnt manage to connect.

The river cleaned up a lot, allowing us to fish on Monday, we are stirring up a lot of silt on the river bed when we wade, poor little fish must have been choking.
The weather has been quite cold, in fact very cold, hail and a lot of heavy showers even snow on the mountain tops. Hopefully it will get warmer this week, raining heavy just now.
Seeing one or two big sea trout and grilse moving through.
Two fisher from Sweden their first time at Cairnton managed to make contact, well done Mats and Bengt. One of the other fisher tried very hard but failed to contact, better luck next time Terry, Stuart had 3 sea trout and Dave a salmon.

No fishing done yesterday as a result of heavy thunder storms on Friday afternoon in the Aboyne area, the river turned into a sea of mud, dont know where it came from, probably the Tarland burn, some farmers must have lost a lot of soil, should be clear by tomorrow.
Aboyne was flooded on Friday evening, we had no rain at all.
Summer arrived this week with temperatures in the 20's it is supposed to get colder this week.
We got our first grilse of the season, they were in good condition.

It felt like winter at the beginning of the week, frosty nights with cold winds during the day, by the end of the week it had warmed a bit, still cold for this time of the year.
The fishers enjoyed themselves, barbecues every lunchtime, one day they left the lunch hut open while they sat outside to have a drink, one of the dogs decided he fancied a bit of roe deer fillet and a bread roll, Colins dog said it was very tasty.
Another evening one fisher loaded the dishwasher after their evening meal and a dram or two, put in the detergent but had forgotten to take the wrapper off, poor Dave got a lot of stick about that.
Yesterday a fisher in the Cottage pool was casting when two mallards flew past, he hit them with his line, next cast he realized his fly was missing, hopefully the fly will fall off.

It was great to see some fish at the first half of the week, but unfortunately they didn't want to stay.
The river dropped enough for us to get out to the Rock Heads, one fisher was rewarded with a nice 10lb fish well done Edward, another fisher wasn't quite so lucky, sat down on the back to the bank, glad you didn't get too wet Hugh. Another member of the party who has not fished a lot, decided to try off the jetty in the Grey Mare and within 5mins he hooked a sea trout, but unfortunately it came off, hard luck John. Hope to see you all again.
The weather turned a good bit colder at the end of the week strong NE winds making casting very difficult,it also brought back the ash back from Iceland, some fishers thought they might have to make alternative travel arrangements.
The swifts and the osprey were seen this week, not many birds left to return.

Not a lot to write about this week, a big fishing effort for very little reward. Normally the fishers we have at the beginning of the week wonder why fishers at the end of the week catch more fish than them, well, tables were turned this week, all be it a 2lb sea trout, well done Graham.
River levels have kept up well, will be running out of snow shortly.
It turned a lot colder last night, speaking about a frost this morning, haven’t been outside yet to find out.

Back to winter at the start of the week, cold and wet mid week but a lot warmer yesterday.
Both our fish were caught in the Mid Ferroch, the first, 17lbs was landed after a long fight, it stayed very deep and didn't want to come to the bank, after a lot of skill by the fisher we landed it, well done Major,(remember to oil your reel for next year), also get some studs in the soles of your waders save you having to change your clothes on the riverbank, it is very slippery going out to the Rock Heads, sorry I missed you falling in again Ha Ha.
The second one,5lbs was landed by a regular fisher from Cumbria well done Victor.
Still not seeing a lot of fish running, cant blame the volcanic ash this week.

The salmon and sea trout caught this week by new fishers to Cairnton, well done Alan and Stuart hope to see you again.

At last we have got rid of the grue, yippee.
At the start of the week I spent a lot of time breaking ice, one day I had a large piece ready to push away before lunch, I gave it a push, but unfortunately the fisher hadn’t lifted his line quick enough, the hook was anchored, he had to run down the Mid Ferroch rather fast in deep snow, he lost his fly luckily his leader broke, his nickname now is Eddie the Iceberg.
The two salmon we caught were in the Mid Ferroch by the same fisher from Norway. His first salmon on the fly, the line got snagged on one of our cleeks, he managed to wade out and free it, fortunately the river was low. He said the water was lapping the top of his waders. He has caught a lot on the worm in Norway, he might be converted, with a bit of help from his friends, well done Kjetil.

We started the season with the river banks covered in snow, very slippery for felt soled waders, the snow disappeared on Friday.
We had two salmon on the opening day caught by brothers from Fraserburgh one in the Grey Mare 12lbs,caught by Graham, the other in the Lower Ferroch 8lbs by Mike,he had a bit of problem landing it, he decided to jump in and didn't realize the depth, shipped a bit of water, he said but it was well worth it.
The other was caught in the Old Garden by one of our regulars, well done Norman.
I think the weather is turning colder later this week, at least the skiers are happy and we should have good river levels when it melts.

The water temp crept up this week, which seemed to put fish off the take, but the colours of the trees at this time of the year are fantastic.
One of our fishers this week wasn't content with falling in once, he decided to do it again, much to the amusement his fishing companion David (and the ghillie) who could not stop laughing, luckily no damage, just his pride. Waders should be dried out by next year Mike.

I got a photo not very clear, some of the fishers say, a northern diver or a juvenile gannet.
Yesterday we had very strong gales, I was parked down at the Malt Steep with one of the fishers who was at the Old Garden, I decided to shift my vehicle, but before I could shift it a tree came down and blocked both vehicles, had to get chain saw to clear road, a few other trees down, wind dropped today

The weather is more settled just now, some rain yesterday but fine today, there has been had a lot thunder storms this year.
On Friday night we were invited to have some supper with the fishers, I tried fishing in the Ferrochs with Iains grilse rod, no problems until I tried a few more yards of line, then after doing a spey cast the line kept going, the braided loop attaching the line to the backing parted. I saw the line at the bottom of Mid Ferroch, then it disappeared, Iain and I decided to wade out to the island and have a look, I waded all the way up to the bottom of the Mid Ferroch, and on the way back I fell in, my hair was the only dry part, a lot of hilarity in the top hut, had a good glass of whisky after I got changed and lovely supper, thanks Iain and Trish.

In 30yrs at Cairnton we have never caught such heavy sea trout, average weight 3 lbs, usually under 2 lbs.
Most of the salmon caught this week were sea liced and in excellent condition.
I went down to Bristol for two days, before I left I had a phone call saying "got 1 fish Upper Ferroch," later on another call" 1 fish Rock Head," then at night another call" 2 sea trout," the fishers David and Brian, told me to stay a bit longer, they had two more sea trout on Friday.
Yesterday I went out to the Rock Head to land a fish for Iain, as soon as I got out it started to rain, it got heavier and heavier, we didn't have on jackets, got the fish in the net and about to return it, when a flash of lightning and a rumble of thunder above our heads sent us back pretty quick to the vehicles, both soaked to the skin, long time since I have seen such heavy rain.

The weather turned very cold this week with lots of showers some of hail, there was even some snow on the mountain tops, so much for summer.
We had some of the previous owners fishing this week, with mixed catches, the most unusual being caught in Glister by Miranda, while hand lining in a parr, a brown trout grabbed it, let it go then grabbed it again across the middle only to let it go again, by this time the parr was damaged the fisher dangled the parr in the water, along came the trout and swallowed it, that was the last parr it will eat, the trout weighed between 2 and 3lbs.
We had two fish in the Spout this week, first caught by Katrina, had a bit of a struggle but ended successfully, hope she doesn't have such a struggle in October.
The second one was caught by her brother Mark, again a bit of a battle, he also landed another two, Upper Ferroch and Rock Head, their mother who fished very hard was unlucky not even a touch, your turn next year Joanna.

It was his biggest ever salmon, a real beauty 38ins long with a lot of sea lice on it, I wonder if he has stopped shaking yet, he was glad I was on hand to help him land it, I am sure he would have managed, but it might have taken a bit longer.

Another of the fishers on his first trip to Scotland caught a springer in the Lower Ferroch, well done Ake. Good river levels and temp all week, with some very sunny days and a bit of frost at nights.

Good to see upper reaches getting fish, most of the fish we caught had sea lice on them. The fish are not showing as they pass us, I had a ghillie from Lower Drum fishing on Friday, and he said the same, fish not showing, he managed to get two fish, well done Shane.
The water level is gradually dropping, most of the snow must be gone. It has turned a bit colder, so that might slow the fish down, hopefully.

I don't need to tell you the fishers had a difficult week, very few fish showing, they caught 4 kelts (spelts as one of them called them, at first he thought he had caught a springer, but looking at the photo it was a kelt).
They had to endure blizzards, wind, rain and freezing rings, one had toothache and another lost a days fishing due to flu, so if anyone deserved a springer they did.
There is quite a lot of snow on the hills, so that should help river levels in the weeks to come.

At last some good news, the four fishers from Sweden had some success, one had 4, one had 2 and the others had 1 each, plus they had a few kelts. The fish ranged from 6lbs to 21.5lbs, a few had sea lice. Fish are being caught lower down the river.

Conditions not ideal for fishing, frosty the first half of week with grue one morning it went by 11:00. Snow second half, with Saturday being very unpleasant, strong SE wind with rain, sleat and snow. The fishers deserved some reward for their effort.
We had about 10 kelts, they have gone quiet as well.
It started raining last nignt, still raining today, should get a bit of a rise in water and temp.

Very poor for the final week, even more disappointment for the present owners to finish up with a blank week on their last weeks fishing as owners of Cairnton. Also sad for my family, the end of working for the Mitchell family, we have worked for them for 57yrs. , between my father and me.
Now, looking forward to working for the new owners, hopefully seeing all the regular fishers in the coming year.
All the best,
Dave.
